Modified Wastegate Actuators Installed

Well, just got my latest (and hopefully last ) engine mod. Modified wategate actuators.

Here is a mod that is really underlooked for tuned cars and truely works great. My X50 now spools to 1.2 bar at least 500 RPM lower, boost ramps much better in all gears including 1st and 2nd (which is a problem on stock wastegates). The car is much quicker in a hard launch type start due to better and higher boost in the lower gears. Overall throtle response is way better. I can't recommend it enough. It is relatively inexpensive. You'll kick yourself for not having done it earlier.

As usual the guys at Speed Gallery were great to deal with. Thanks!

God dammit, your boosting at 1.2 bars with just what, stg 2 software?!?!?

I was lookin at mine tonight, i'll pull 1.1 in first but a steady .9 or 1.0 spike in any other gear.. These obviously wont help the K16 right

I have a GIAC 91 octane X50 flash which is considered Stage 3 with exhaust and V-Flow intake. GIAC says that's good for 560 HP/560TQ.

I can tell you that these stock turbos will definitely hold 1.4 bar all the way to redline, but that isn't safe on the crap gas I run in CA. I actually saw it in testing until we adjusted the boost down a little.

If you've ever driven an X50/Turbo S or GT2 (same engine all around), you'll notice more turbo lag. I wasn't getting max boost until 3800 RPM with stock wastegate actuators in the higher gears, and was only hitting 1.0 to 1.1 in 1st and 2nd. The car is soo much liverlier now! Higher boost in 1st and 2nd (which matters a lot the stoplight if you know what I mean) and max boost at 3000 RPM. That means a lot more torque earlier in the powerband.

BTW I asked about the wheel spacers and it seems they may not be so cost efficient. I'm continuing the search though. I'll keep you updated.

On 91 make sure you keep it to 1.2 or 1.25.. You can do 1.3 but doing 1.4 will mean the TB shuts down no matter what it says on the boost gauge.

Thanks for the input. We looked for engine codes and it was perfectly clear. So we didn't trip anything in testing. I'm pretty happy with a solid 1.2 bar as indicated by the stock readout.

Do you know if GIAC has a built in boost limiter? Is there a way to raise the redline by a few hundred RPM? My car hits it right at 6500.

K24madness is infamous around these parts
Ari,

I found the same to be true on my K24 hybrids (not Kevins). On my 993tt with a greddy ebc & Tial springs these K24's are super responsive. Every one who has driven the car is blown away with the responsiveness.

Is the waste gate actuators a simple swap over job that can be done yourself at home or do they need setting up?

Ari,
Did Speed Gallery supply the parts. Would you mind a PM with what you paid.

Speed gallery supplied all the parts and labor. I don't like to make quotes for them. I know I woudn't appreciate it if owned a business. I hope you understand.

I can tell you that they modify your stock units. Give them a call. They're very cool.

can you expand on this a tad? i've experienced this when i had a spike to 1.4 on 91...

i'm assuming the ecu is detecting some detonation... our ecu shuts down the TB to prevent further detonation? or is this only in extreme situations like 91 @ 1.4?

Well "spikes" are one thing but any type of sustained boost greater than 1.3 bar sets off the overboost codes and then the ECU forces the throttle body to close and you get no power obviously. Up until recently GIAC was the only US tuner able to solve this problem. Apparently a couple of others can now do this.

Yes Todd can do it.... and Giac.... But u have to know what ur buying b4 u do it... getting tuners to do it after the act.. forget about it...
It seems that only the engine build tunning packages run high boost.... therefore no stage3,4 of what ever even boosts(sustained) more then 1.3 bars.
