Which LSD?
One other aspect of a LSD on the track is braking, which is way more stable, deeper into the corner with less abs intrusion. But not everybody needs that, big benefit in the race car. Drag car I wouldn't think as important. The quaife LSD in my race car makes driving it easy.
Your $5K Motorsport Cup/Guard LSD can be compared to $10K 3-way high end Motorsport shocks like JRZs/MCS in the same way your $1K Quife/Wavetrack can be compared to $3K PSS10s or other budget coil overs. All get the job done in one form or another and it's up to you to figure out what is appropriate or sufficient for your use.
Funny how these topics come and go - and come back again. I/Cs, diffs, IPD plenums, brakes... LOL
The one advantage of a Wavetrack over all other Quaife/Torsen/TBD on the market is that it is supposed to provide torque transfer on braking as well as on acceleration. It would be nice if there were an objective, back-to-back test on some of this stuff. Or in the case of a Wavetrack, even someone who's upgraded on the same platform and can provide insights into driving both.
Till then, tho, everyone will have to pay their money and take their chances...
I didn't see OS Giken mentioned here, they make fantastic diffs, that aren't quite as expensive as the Porsche stuff but a bit more than Quaif. You will find them in some of the fastest track cars of all kinds around the country. I swear by mine, and have set numerous lap records with it. Installed in 2010 with zero problems to date in a track only car. Just another option.
Rough idea of cost for the 997 GT2 LSD? Is it this one for 3300.00? http://www.championmotorsport.com/product-p/gt-lsd.htm
I have a used 997 gt2 rs LSD that I’m about to list for sale. Approximately 2k miles, and 1 track day. I got an offer on a GT pro that I couldn’t refuse when I had the engine out to weld coolant fittings. Nothing wrong with the origional LSD, but would recommend new clutches and increased preload as the stock unit in both the gt2 and gt3 is pretty light. Open to offers.
If you haven't opened the transmission up previously and you're looking to set your car up for some hard use, I'd get real LSD like a guard or CUP one. Consider having it set up by an expert who can evaluate the trans internals too and you may be money ahead in the long run. Brian Copans did mine and has worked great for a couple years now, lockup under decel/braking is awesome with a true LSD.
