Brake squeak/dust..any aftermarket pads?

I currently own a 2003 996tt with about 8300 miles.I am experiencing a lot of brake squeaking when coming to a stop while braking slowly.I am also having tons of brake dust. This is my first porsche so I am not too familiar with it.I noticed the pads having a lot of life left so I am not sure what would be causing this squeak.I am more concerned about the squeak plus the embarresment of having a porsche squeak like a clunker when slowing down at a light Any suggestions would be appreciated. I was thinking maybe an aftermarket set of brake pads, or just letting the dealer take care of it. I try HARD to stay away from dealers....sometimes your car leaves worse then what it came in...I know... I work for one

Thanks in advance

I'm about to put the Mintex pads on my car, so I'll let you know how they work out. They are supposed to produce less dust than the stock pads and yet still provide good "street" pad stopping ability.

AWE has the Mintex pads, I heard very good feedback with brake dust free and the price is so cheap too. I will try it this spring.

I personally don't like mintex pads. My experience was with my Audi S4, not a Porsche. When wet, they would not grab at initial pedal application. That is very frightening at high speeds, it feels like your brakes are out. I also had to bed them about once a week. They did not dust which is great but I did not like the pedal feel and the wet issue is not comforting. Maybe they use a different compound or whatever for Porsche, I am just giving my experience, I changed them to Axxis pads and like them better. I have no recommendations for other pads, just letting you know my experience.............

8300 on a 03, man you need to get out and drive that mother, its probably rust.
Seriously i think you are better off with the original pads even though they produce alot of dust they dont usually squeal where as aftermarket ones usually do. Ive used mintex and pagid in mine because of track days but i had to take them out on the street because the noise was unbearable.
Try removing the pads and checking the shims are in place and that there is no debris lodged in there.(simple job)

I heard decent things from 1 or 2 here on the Mintex and was just at my mechanic discussing same yesterday. All of a sudden and without any change in stopping power, both my front rotors maintain 1/4 inch rust ring along outer edge. Pads have only 7000 miles and don't seem worn but never had the initial bite I liked. It got better after chnging BF to castrol race fluid. I'd appreciate anyone reporting initial bite or grab that would br contrary to what Griza said. Mintex was at the top of my list but now I don't know.

Just for the record. The Mintex pads are not a track pad or higher performing pad. It is a stock equivalent with low dust.

I don't want anyone to think that stopping distances will be reduced.

This is just an FYI.

We have been selling Mintex for over 8 years with great success. Hope this clears things up.

Thanks guys for all the useful info, I think I am going to try drive the car a little more, I mean I drive it maybe 3-4 times a week and for about 20 miles a day. Lets see what happens in the next few days, this time I ll concentrate on using the brakes a bit more aggresive. I also guess changing the pads wont hurt if it continues, especially for ones with less brake dust. Thanks again guys

Sam.
