Beep for keyless entry?

My keyless entry is working fine and lights up the parking lights but it doesnt make a sound. Is it possible to program it to beep or something to notify me that the car is locked or unlocked? I didnt see anything in the owners manual.

I asked my wrench about this for my '03 and he said, "No," which means to me that there is no way to do it with existing (factory) hardware and software. Enter a third party?

I know been there done that. When I bought my Turbo I asked the exactly same question. Would be nice to know that car is actually locked....especially when it is raining.

Ditto for 2002. Asked for it about 2 months ago and was told "No". Hope this is programmable going forward.

I just learned about this the other day. I went to arm the alarm and the horn for the first time, let out a short beep. I wondered how any setting had changed (I like the silence), so I pulled out the manual. Turns out that if you leave something like the glove box open (my center armrest storage was open), the horn will beep to let you know that something is open.

You could leave something open (prob not too convenient) or possibly trick the car into thinking the glove box or center compartment were open if you're handy with wiring. Certainly a kludge, but it would accomplish what you want.

HTH.

Interesting. I would prefer silence to the horn I think.

Absolutely correct VoltesV. I have done that with my center console open many of times.

I think you'll also get a beep if you do something like arm/disarm/rearm without opening the door. It's just telling you that you are confused. Or the car is confused. Half the time I cannot tell if I have armed the car, so I go back and try to open the door. That's better than having the thing beep at me.

I, too, like the quiet. But, the horn beep is rather subtle. The good thing is that it is easy to test.

The glove box switch is the easiest way to get notification when you are arming the car. I depend on it now. When I swapped out my center console some time ago to get it painted my exterior color I found out by accident that my switch was not installed properly when I replaced everything. When I arm the car now I get the chirp. It kind of sounds like a wimpy little chirp but still it is very helpful.

If anyone is interested, they should just find some instructions on how to remove the center console and they will see how to do it. I have my relay switch just sitting in the console and it could be installed back in the proper location at any time. The idea of protecting my center console storage is strange to me. If someone has broke in to my car the contents of the center console storage is the least of my worries....

Funny...when I found out what was causing the beeping, I was thinking the exact same thing. I suppose they put the same module for all the 996s, including cabs where it might make more difference.

My concern with the 'kludge' and the glove box is...I wonder if the light in there stays on or not (kind of like a fridge?). If I were to do this, I would try to wire a switch to the center console so that you can select if you want the horn or not. I don't really even know if that is feasible or not...just thinking out loud.

At this point I can not tell if any of my lights stay on longer than normal. I can say that they all switch off eventually. I have walked into my garage and it is pretty dark. My gauge LEDs seem to stay on for a while after I exit the car. Again I don't know if this is normal or not since it has been awhile. I don't think there is any fear of a dead battery or anything. My alarm red LED blinks a strange pattern to indicated that a sensor is open but it doesn't really matter to me.

Yeah, I don't think it would be a prob. I'm pretty sure (not certain, though) that any lights that stay on would turn off after a few minutes rather than drain the battery.

I never noticed the diff LED pattern; I'll have to check that out. I love finding out about the little nuances of this car (or any car, for that matter). Since the car is new to me, it was more exciting than I care to admit to find about about the horn/alarm deal.
