Exhaust/cat options

I recently bought a 996tt that has an aftermaket exhaust system. The exhaust seems too loud for my taste as I kind of have been dailying it and was wondering if I could revert them back to stock. I tried searching for OEM cats, but didnt find them anywhere. I couldn't find any info on whether the stock exhaust can be used with aftermarket cats (and whether it would reduce the sound/droning). Does anyone have any inputs on how I could achieve a quieter exhaust?

I believe I have an AWE exhaust.

You're not going to be able to easily use stock cats as they are integrated into the oem exhaust system, all welded.

I'd verify the manufacturer by getting under there and snapping some pics and then contact them directly.

I just switched back to the full stock exhaust from the Kline 2.5" because i need to get the car smoged here in Cali. it took me about 2 hours to swap it out but i have "experience" with this. It has passed before with the Kline but they are getting tighter with visual inspections and if you get failed then you may need to go to the special place that really digs in to make sure you are stock. So not taking any chances. The Kline sounded awesome and i miss it. However my stereo sounds sooo much better now, just did my 4 hour commute i do every several weeks and i think i may stick with stock. Check e-bay, sometime there are stock systems that have the cat replaced with 200 cell performance cats $$$. Might be a good option. The Europipe is regarded as the best for low noise and still get performance increase. Keep an eye on E-bay fro a stock system near you, they vary wildly with some people asking $1,500. i got mine locally for $275.

Forgot to ask, is a X50? if so you will have more drone than a non X50

Thanks for the replies Stebo and Third-Reef.

Its glad to hear that commute was better with the stock exhaust. Yes this is an X50. I guess it never occurred to me that the X50 might have more drone. I see some stock systems on ebay for around 500. I'll keep a look out for local ones. The car has a GIAC tune on it too, do you know if I have to reflash it if I switch over to a stock system?

I believe the speakers/stereo of the car are also going bad, so I'll need to replace that as well.

I have a custom stage 2 sambo tune, I have no re- flashed with the stock exhaust, all seems fine, a little slower spool though and does not pull quite as hard.
