I would have to say that the M3 does far better in the maintenance and repair department than the 996 TT. But thats just how it is. Bimmers are cheaper to service and fix than porsche than ferrari. And it of course helps that the current M3 is such a well made car.

Yea man i agree Peter, my M3 hardly had to have anything fixed and if i did, even being heavily modded dealer would cover it. They even did a stock clutch replacement for gods sake and did it as a one time grace Anyway i know porsche are more expensive to maintain BUT, the thing that gets me is how they wouldnt replace something faulty like that unless its proven to be heavily tracked or abused, that's beyond me!!

The ‘popping out of 2nd’ is the prelude to complete transmission failure, which needs total transmission replacement.

All 996TT model years appear to have weak transmissions, which may put a serious damper on the value of a used 996TT’s. Porsche does not yet own up to the problem. Worse yet, they are trying to avoid covering transmission failure under warranty.

A used 996TT of any model year should be viewed as having a potentially bad transmission. The cost of replacement is running $10-12k. Here is the my long sorry saga over on Rennlist:

New transmission needed on 2003 X50: Porsche refusing to cover under warranty ( 1 2 3 4 5 ... Last Page )
Wow man and after hearing this, im scared to ever drive my turbo hard now I was just thinking wow at stg 2, no problems except normal maintenance and i push the car HARD on some occasions, not beating on it but enjoying its performance to its full potential. Now hearing this and that the tranny isnt that strong when im thinking, wow this tranny is so damm strong i want to cry!!

Hummm, this 2nd gear thing kinda concerns me especially when you are taking about spending $10k replacing the tranny.... How do the Tiptronic cars have the same tranny issues or is it just the 6mt???
