Looking for input on potential purchase
thanks for the upthread clarification. i get it now. "branded" as in that chuck connors tv show from the 60's or what those misguided women in that weird nxvium(sp? ) sex cult allowed to have themselves imprinted with..
i don't know anything about the evospec build you alluded to either. but at 130k miles, that the car required(?) internal surgery ( unless of course it was elective? ) is only one more reason to be circumspect about this particular specimen. any rebuild would be wholly unnecessary and overkill, unless one wanted a track car. even then that would be a 3.8 or dare is say? a 4.0 "build". the stock mezger motor, properly maintained, is good for several hundred thousand miles. with both care, and commensurate near daily flogging.
for reference and balance. my current 96t was once tracked fairly regularly at willow here, and now as the old girl enjoys her later ( but not declining ) years in quarantined pastures is worth +/- 28/30k ( tops ). bearing in mind. it's maintained regularly and as fast any old "bolt on" equipped ***** can be.
given the title seems clear? offer them 29k ( 30 tops - provided no structural/frame damage from the "mystery incident" ).
or find another car, would be my advice - and good luck.

I genuinely appreciate the feedback and opinions from everyone. I’m aware it’s ultimately up to me, but I like having everyone’s perspective.
That "error on carfax" will come up if you ever sell it and you will be the one trying to explaine it away and taking a 20% hit. Also, cracked head, rebuilt motor, are there receipts showing parts replaced? Does not sound good. A 30k car in reasonable condition should have much better odds than the car you are looking at. I might consider it with any one of the negatives but they all add up to some sketchyness.

Im more concerned about clarification of the possible
mileage error. I agree with you, even if it’s nullified it’s still a flag for any potential owner in the future.
One positive is this is a 2 owner car, with present owner having had it since 2007. I’m more likely to believe work done by the current owner than most cars that have passed hands 6-7 times and 3 owners back someone claimed to have done XYZ work on the car.
I purchased a 40k mile car with no documentation that had been tracked and showed 5 owners. As such I could tell from the mods, the PPI and the general condition of the car it was loved and taken care of. Many tracked cars are better maintained than garage queens. No regrets whatsoever, pushing 100k and still gets tracked. I may have a bit more feel for these things as I was Porsche technician in the early 80s.

I think I’m going to go for the 03 x50 car as a first choice, then have this 130k mi. car as a backup plan.
John Bray has the car currently and is doing a full inspection. He said there are no indications the car was in an accident. Everything is clear from that standpoint.
The only potential title branding is from the odometer mileage that was reflected on the Carfax. I spoke to his credit union who holds the lien. They state they never would have loaned on a branded vehicle. The branded title would have passed directly through their hands. But he’s going to the dmv on Monday to see if there’s anyway to acquire a copy of the title for verification purposes.
I like the fact the car has extensive performance upgrades and an overhauled motor. A clean 30k mike car could have an engine that’s a ticking time bomb, and that’s where significant expenses arise. I don’t mind dropping a couple grand into refinishing wheels or paint correction if the motor is bullet proof. I feel confident in the car from a mechanical standpoint. I just don’t wanna get burned if I decide to sell it in a year or 2.

If theres no damage what was the accident on carfax?
if you think the car is in good shape, the lot of us have told you our thoughts sounds like you got your ducks ina row good luck.
Ps.
if coolant lines arent fixed prob run really fast.
Agreed. Track guys know they can’t have something go wrong on the track, so are usually more responsive to addressing potential issues. I feel like most Porsche owners are quite thorough on their cars, but occasionally you get the person who can afford the car, but not the maintenance once things start adding up.

Eh i learned the hard way, maintenance isnt so bad on these if you do it yourself. Paying for "book" labor is a *****. Prolly saved 10k in book labor and indy/dealer parts since i started doing work myself with the help of a gtr master tech. I pay him in beers and e liquid lol.

If the car had a loan on it, then the title is clear as no bank will loan money on a branded title car, unless it was wrecked while under the owner's possession. If you like it, buy it. Don't speculate on the future, live now.
great advice especially with everything going on... how better to socially distance yourself than gap people at least 6 car lengths...
