I did some more thinking this morning and thought I wanted to be sure it was the alternator. This afternoon I took a mechanics stethoscope and listen to the alternator; it is not the culprit.
I removed the airbox to gain access to all of the bearings and pulleys. The only place I could pick it up was the water pump, my heart sank.
Then I touched the stethoscope to the belt guard that is attached to the water pump and could actually feel the vibration and pick it up much louder in the stethoscope. This was definitely it! :-)
There is a spot underneath where the guard is so close to the water pump but not touching; 2000 RPM must’ve created the proper harmonics for the amplitude of the vibration to be just right for the metal to metal contact and rattle. It’s now fixed! :-)
Thank you guys so much for the thought and responses!
Looking down at the water pump & pulley you can see the belt guard that is screwed to it. From underneath looking up you can see how paperthin the gap is.
