While I've been on this forum for years and throughout the past have been on and off with posting --- I figured that I'd re-introduce myself and share with you all my new acquisition...
Browsing the forums as many of us do... and different marketplace sites... as many of us also do... I ran across this 01' 996 with 58K miles and a good amount of goodies. It was local so - I really had no good excuse to NOT check it out. That said, I did. I drove it. And, of course "needed" it. That said - - - - this now sits in the garage:
It is also joined by the following group of friends (less the M52 e30 which was sold last weekend to assist the bank account situation due to this recent acquisition). The RS6 and all of its' goodies are soon to be for sale as well as I continue to thin out the herd and focus on this car.
Some of the highlights of the 911: - GMG Club Sport Suspension Package - - - double adjustable remote reservoir Moton shocks as well as all suspension link upgrades. - Tech Art adjustable Sway Bars with TRG drop links. - Roll bar w/Schroth 4 point Cam Lock harness - Larger size rotors (I forget the exact spec) - Steel Braided Brake Lines - ECU chip (not sure which one - - - need to go through the 3" ring binder of records to figure out) - GT1 Hybrid Turbo Charges by Ultimate Motorwerks - Billet Pop-off Valves and Forged Diverter Valves - Euro Pipe Exhaust system - Ported and Extrude Honed Exhaust Manifold - Powder coated and Extrude Honed Y-Pipe - Ceramic coated Exhaust and Hot Side of Turbos - Techart Short Shift Kit
- Wheel stud conversion
- GT-2 factory front end with vent work
- GT-2 aftermarket rear lid/wing
- Carbon Fiber shell seats
- Rennline pedals and driver's mat - Carbon Fiber Rear Section - Carbon Fiber Center Air Vent - Carbon Fiber Trim Strip - Carbon Fiber Instrument Surround
- Carbon Fiber Steering Wheel Inserts
- Carbon Fiber eBrake
- Carbon Fiber Shifter
Haven't spent much time behind the wheel just yet. Moreover, actually didn't register/insure it until this past Friday as I told myself that at LEAST one of the cars has to leave the stable prior to me even beginning to spend time on this one. The E30 was gone within the week!
Future plans (and I welcome any and all suggestions/recommendations):
- Ceramic-coat and front end clear-shield install (the paint is in excellent shape and I figure I should protect it). I tend to drive my vehicles vs. letting them sit. Looking at taking it to Polished 2 Perfection in Millersville MD for this work.
- Have the wheels refinished. They are looking a bit tired as the car has had some time on the track in its past ownership. I am thinking factory color - - - however, if anyone has any other ideas - please share!
- Have the coolant pipes welded. As the car has had engine out services in the past --- the coolant pipes have actually NOT been taken care off just yet. No leaks (knock on wood) of any sort/kind. I take it to understand that this issue is equivalent to that of the IMS on the non-turbo 996 and 997 vehicles. You either DO have an issue or you DONT have the issue. Regardless, the welding of the coolant pipes will be a peace of mind for me..
- Conduct some minor leather repair on the existing seats. The seats are beautiful (at least in my opinion). The carbon fiber really goes well and so does the seat color. There are, however, a few cuts on them where I think it was either items in the previous owner's pant pockets that had poked through a bit or, the seat-belt rubbed through a bit.
- Replace the alpine head unit and the amp set up with something a bit more "modern" while also "oem" looking. I think the audio system was gone through in the car in the early 2010's and its a bit outdated.
- Have the calipers re-built/powder coated. There is some clear coat peeling on them. I am thinking of doing them in yellow this time around.
- Have the dash leather replaced. It does have the typical 996 leather damage on the dash.
- Hardwire my detector and install one of those dash cams. Not sure which one is best/reasonable that perhaps you guys could recommend?
- Replace the hood struts! the darn thing almost knocked me out when I was peeking in there the other day
- See if there is a means of refinishing the carbon fiber trim. To my surprise --- all of it is actually in pretty good shape - but, there are a few cracks (one on steering wheel and one on the horse-shoe trip below the cigarette lighter). Not sure if there is a service for this?
- Wheel spacers? Currently they sit a bit too deep "in". The car does have rolled fenders as the previous owner did have some bigger/wider wheels with slicks on them for the track and auto cross --- so, I think I certainly have a bit of space I can fill up. Not sure which spacers and how wide others are running?
- Full delete of the rear wiper (currently partially deleted (wiper arm removed). Looking to get a plug and plug it completely... however - $99 from bumperplugs is a bit steep for this darn thing!
- Clean up the horseshoe buttons... no longer have a hydro wing so want to put a blank in for that one as well as well as the wiper. Does anyone know of any clever uses for those buttons? Or, know the part number for the appropriate “blanks”?
Anyhow --- there it is guys. Hope you all enjoy the pictures and I look forward to getting more involved in posting here! I am in the MD/DC/VA area. Have been around with many different vehicles for years but, haven't been a very active poster. This is certainly one of my "wildest" cars that I've owned and I greatly look forward to the experience. Some of the past cars: RS6 (currently owned, to be for sale soon), several E30's (including the M52 one recently sold), several older P-car 911's (inclusive one never finished frame off restoration project that I sold in beginning of COVID), 951's, 944's, 928's, 914's, 955 Cayenne, CL600, D2 S8, Supercharged Mini-Coopers, Super beetle . Also have an X3 Msport and a F31 328i for daily driving purposes.
Look forward to thoughts, comments, criticisms, opinions, etc!

You jumped in with feet. That’s some car. A few thoughts... I’d drive it some before jumping into coolant lines. You may find some things that need to be fixed while the motor’s out
over time. Check your service records for plug, fluid changes. These cars, esp modded, go through plugs...think every 20k or so. Also check your motor & trans mounts. When you have the bumper off, find your emergency boot latch release cable. Do same up front. With rolled fenders you can likely go pretty big with spacers. 7x15 F&R is pretty common. Obviously get the longer wheel studs. You can put a nice double-din CarPlay unit in. See my thread on Rennlist or others for parts and instructions. Yours will be easier with no MOST (optical). Carbon fiber repair is actually not that hard. If you’ve ever fixed fiberglass it’s basically the same process. Good COVID project 🙂.
Also being the owner of a silver 6TT, I have some thoughts on wheel color.
IMO wheel color that can break up the silver and give it some contrast are fantastic. When I bought my car the OEM wheels had recently been refinished in Seal Gray with a dark primer. I then had my calipers powder coated acid green. I have since added aftermarket 19in wheels (satin gunmetal) and lots of other mods, but still love the darker wheel contrast.

Nice find! Add: remove front bumper and thoroughly clean/inspect rads. You'd be surprised with how much road debris, e.g,., dried leaves, bugs (Turbos do kill ;em fast). Not to mention that after time these will decomp and cause pitting or even rust.
