Mutual Respect
Good post Craig.
Markski, so true--I get thumbs-up on the road from all different cars and zero negativity.
Funny thing...friends that have the most dough and most cars never seem to spout hate, but rather they just enjoy all the differences in the cars and appreciate car guys of all kinds...

I agree with Markski...In person I have not had any disrespect from other car owners. That being said, half the fun of the internet is playing whatever evil twin you want to be, taking (and arguing) sides you normally wouldn't take, criticizing others and making fun of their cars. I guess I really don't see the harm in this as I think most rational human beings recognize the internet for what it is...mostly a form of entertainment. H*ll if we all agreed, that wouldn't be any fun at all. Personal attacks are uncalled for, but "my cars better and faster" discussions are appropriate and
for the most part.
for the most part.
Craig,
Well done. 6speedonline definitely leads the way in the area in respect. It is not just the marque as in Porsche. It is the members. Other forums take swipes at Porsche as well as 6speed. For the most part you don't find 6speed degrading other forums or marques.
When a member gets a little off base others seem to politely let them know.
In addition as Alexander noted recently, "this forum just doesn't have all the vulgarities."
Respect ..............yes. Along will a high dosage of class.

Some humor ...
I'm not sure what caused this ‘lecture’ and not certain I agree with the tone -- most stereotypes are partially based in fact. But here is a humorous rundown of car owner stereotypes:
http://www.netfunny.com/rhf/jokes/96/Sep/cars.html
Notable:
Chevrolet Corvette - I'm in a mid-life crisis
Porsche 911 Turbo - I have a three inch thingie

During my visits to these other forums, I have discovered that many non-Porsche owners often stereotype Porsche owners as arrogant, condescending and disrespectful of other car owners. Having participated in the Porsche community for several years now, I know this stereotype to be wholly inaccurate and unwarranted. It has been my experience that Porsche owners are, with few exceptions, genuine car enthusiasts who respect owners of all different makes and models of cars. Unfortunately, there are a small minority of Porsche owners who occasionally make statements that do a disservice to the Porsche community and give credence to the stereotype that we are arrogant and disrespectful.
During recent months, there has been a good deal of discussion here about the C6 ZO6 and, to a lesser degree, Vipers. Some here like/own these cars -- others do not. For the most part, these discussions have focused on performance issues and remained respectful, regardless of whether the poster likes or dislikes the C6 ZO6 or the Viper. However, a few posters have occasionally posted disrespectful statements disparaging owners of Vettes, Vipers and other cars. A few posters have suggested that these other cars are “inferior†to Porsches, as are their owners (e.g., early this evening, a poster suggested that owners of C6ZO6s live in trailer parks). Such comments are disrespectful and, equally important, harmful to the Porsche community in terms of fueling the negative stereotypes.
It appears to me that many of the stereotypes relating to car owners often arise from financial considerations relating to the cost of the car. Certain owners of less expensive cars think that Porsche owners overpaid for an inferior product, and assume that Porsche owners are uninformed and do not realize that other, purportedly better options are available for less money. Conversely, a few Porsche owners perceive less expensive, domestic and/or Japanese cars as per se inferior, regardless of impressive performance statistics, and disparage owners of these cars based on unwarranted stereotypes. The irony in this hierarchal quagmire is that, on the Ferrari and Lambo forums, Porsches are occasionally referred to in inferior terms, and Porsche owners are occasionally stereotyped as wanna-be supercar/exotic owners who cannot afford the price of admission. Likewise, on domestic car forums, disparagement of imports and their owners is common place. Even domestic car owners denigrate one another based upon the enduring Ford v. Chevy debate. The disrespect and unwarranted stereotyping among car enthusiasts is remarkable.
There are a 1000 different considerations that get factored into car purchase decisions, and everyone analyzes and balances these considerations in a different, unique manner. Some place greater emphasis on straight line performance . . . others are more focused on turns . . . some want value . . . others do not care about bang for the buck . . . some want cars that can be modded . . . others are intent on keeping the car stock . . . some want cars that serve many purposes . . . others want single purpose cars . . . . some want back seats . . . . others want something as small and light as possible . . . etc. etc. etc. Financial considerations are only one piece of the puzzle. Moreover, many people who can afford much more expensive cars do not purchase them for a myriad of reasons, including value, perception, etc. (my friend will not purchase a Porsche, even though he can easily afford one, because he does not want to be perceived as excessively wealthy by his employees). Likewise, many Porsche owners also own Vipers, Vettes, EVOs, and Supras, and some former Porsche owners even sold their Porsches in favor of Vettes and Vipers, among others.
VRAlexander is among the best examples of a someone who owns many different brands of cars, including a Lambo, Camero, Porsche, Nova, Viper, Supra, Vette, EVO, etc. etc etc. No one here would suggest that he fits any of the stereotypes occasionally posted about owners of domestics or imports. Just as VRAlexander is undeserving of such stereotypes, so to are most owners of domestics and imports (just as Porsche owners are not deserving of the stereotypes often promulgated about us).
It should also be observed that 6Speedonline has MANY active and valuable members who do not own Porsches. These members own Vettes, Vipers, EVOs, BMWs, Supras, Cobras, etc etc etc. Yet, they are knowledgeable car enthusiasts who enhance our community, and they do not deserve to read negative stereotypes.
We are all part of a greater community of car enthusiasts who enjoy owning, modifying and driving fast cars covering the spectrum of makes and models. We should respect owners of other brands, just as they should respect us. We should set the tone for that mutual respect, even when owners of other brands fail to do so. This applies to all types of performance cars, from Lambos to Vettes, Ferraris to Cobras, Vipers to Supras, BMWs to LS1s, etc. Notwithstanding the obvious and considerable differences between these cars, the owners often share many things in common, including most importantly, a common passion for fast cars. We should cultivate that commonality -- our shared passion -- rather than disparaging one another based upon brands and creating walls between makes of performance cars. You may not like a Camero or a 350Z, but respect the car and the owner who put countless hours of blood, sweat and tears into modifying the car and enhancing its performance. Respect the awesome performance attributes of the C6ZO6, Viper and Cobra, as well as the owners who love these cars, even if you could have purchased 2 Vipers, 3 C6ZO6s or 6 Cobras for the price you paid for your GT2. The owners of these fine cars are no less car enthusiasts than you and I, and they deserve our enduring respect. Likewise, we deserve their respect. Car enthusiasts should endeavor to foster a mutual respect that transcends makes and models. Mutual respect is what its all about, and we should lead by example.

) are just plain shallow and are NOT "car guys" as you said. Sure a lot of the people who post regularly here just love cars, afterall we spend hours a week reading this forum instead of things that might be deemed more interesting by others. It's not about porsche or ferrari or Ford as you say, it's about cars! I think a lot of the people who insult our internet car friends just don't appreciate the automotive world like we do. I think what makes this forum unique is the dedication of its members to restrict and limit the types of immaturity discussed in your post.
Some porsche owners look down on vettes and vipers. Some ferrari owners sneer at p cars. Some lambo owners sneer at f cars. Im sure some McLaren and Zonda owners sneer at all of the above. Maybe some Veyron owner will condescend all other supercars. This is just how it is. There's a certain hierarchy that exist based on price (not so much on performance because then everybody would ride a motorcycle). This will always be the case and no matter how much we discuss "disrespect, arrogance and stereotyping" it wont go away. So then why even worry about it?

Nice post Craig....
However, I also think that sometimes people are just giving their opinions about other cars, and people take it as negative.
For example,
IF I (yeah, that's a BIG IF) am ever able to afford a new Twin Turbo Porsche, I wouldn't EVEN consider buying a Vette or a Cobra, cause I don't like them = me expressing my opinion.
Now one day IF I find myself *OH MY GAWD* wealthy, I'd certainly buy a Cobra for my Mustang-loving friend and whatever Vette for my buddy that likes them.
I think people forget how much "blood, sweat & tears" can go into some of these GREAT cars we see on the internet.

I am definately in that group described as a car nut. I love them all from my Subie to Z06 to Viper to Ferrari. I hope some dat to own them all!
It is interesting to note that we are a small portion of the car buying public. So many people just look at it as a form of transportation instead of a way of life!
We are probably only 10 percent of the total buyers if that.

As always, a well written/open minded intelligient post from an even more intelligient member!
I definitely agree with what you wrote, i dont take part in most thread discussions of 2 cars, and when i do its always about performance and the cars, not like some of the ignoramus's who love to bring up "vette's are for trailor park redneck's, or midlife crisis cars" lol, its just so childish!
Its all about being an enthusiast and open minded. Of course i dislike some cars, but don't say the most ignorant comments about them or their owners and make assumptions, but like anything there's always a few bad apples in the bunch.
