2001 Turbo Lowering Question
2001 Turbo Lowering Question
Hello,
On my 01 Turbo, I have GT2 front bumper and GT2 rear spoiler. Now I need to drop the car, but don't want to loose the OEM confortable ride. Is this possible ?
Actually, I would like to drop the car 1/2" only, front and rear.
Anyone has done this before ?
Regards

When it comes to lowering, typically there is always some kind of compromise. Whether it be ride quality, clearance etc. I've always just done coilovers as the springs are matched to the shocks, they typically offer ride height adjustment, and most coilvers will allow you to adjust rebound so you can dial in the ride quality to your preference. I'm running the Ohlins Road and Track setup, which I've been happy with. There are certainly other options such as the Bilstein PSS10, KW V3, and other less pricey alternatives coming out of Taiwan (Feal and others).
Other options include just changing the springs, which likely would not give you the best ride, as the shocks would no longer match the springs, and would likely be "bouncy". Another option would be "ROW suspension", which stands for "Rest of the World", this suspension is more sporty and sits a tad lower than the US Spec 996 turbo suspension, this kit comes with new springs and shocks, some like this option as it is Porsche designed etc., certainly not as adjustable as coilovers, and may cost almost as much.
There are likely other options as well, these are some of the more popular options.
Really depends on your budget, and preferences. Hope this helps.

I have run at times with both coilovers as well as with simply Bilstein sport dampers with ( H&R red sports ) lowering springs, and while there is a distinct change to ride "quality" using just springs to lower the car, I have found its one that doesn't bother me in the least. I would "avoid" potholes no matter what type of suspension the car used.
The the upthread comment regarding every "change" being a "compromise" is certainly true. I find coilovers have their own relative downside. But that's just me. I don't need their "adjustability". I drive on the street.
GT2 ride height with the proper sized wheels is my optimal compromise and has been for years. YMMV? but I would try "both" before deciding and ultimately choosing which setup to go with, depending upon the intended primary usage for the car.
