Gasoline over fills please help

My 2002 996 turbo has a problem that has been bothering me. The gasoline will not auto-stop when filled to the brim, so the gasoline will overflow a bit. And there is a strong smell of gasoline fume around the car where the car is parked. I know there has to be a leak or tube disconnected somewhere but my mechanic has never been able to find it. Does anyone have similar experience and can point me to the right direction? Much appreciated!

Don't fill it all the way up and see if the smell goes away.
