In the market for a 996TT

Hello, newbie here with a question on 996TT's.

First let me say that I have always loved 996TT's, I actually had one
for about a month:

http://www.suprastore.com/20po996twtu5.html

Unfortunately the 996TT was not practical at the time for my situation and I sold it. I also know a few people with 996TT's (Joe with the EVO700, Sonny Yee, Marcus with the white Gemballa) and I usually attend most of the events Joe and the Scottsdale Exotic Car club put togehter, so I once again got bit by the 996TT bug

Now I'm on the market for an 01 996TT. My main question is whether
there's any "issues" with getting an 01, as opposed to a newer one,
being that that is the first year of the 996TT?

I'm hoping to join the ranks of 996TT owners soon!

Thanks,
Guilly

Actually, thanks to our Euro friends who have a 2000 TT, the 2001 is the 2nd year of production so all the bugs were worked out.

Thanks for the response Shark01, so as far as you know there are no issues with the 01's? I have heard of an issue with the car popping out of 2nd gear. Is this not common?

Thanks,
Guilly

Timeframe is dependant on what kind of deal I find. So if I find a nice black/black 6speed 996TT for a great price I would jump on it now, especially if it has some nice mods (wheels, turbos, exhaust, suspension, etc.)

How did the Gallardo do on the dyno? That thing sounded awesome with the uncorked exhaust!

some issues that i remember from previous posts:

- 1st/2nd gear synchro - some pop out of gear after 30k miles or so
- no glove box - seems trivial but it's a pain
- no cup holders - ditto
- i know there are others but i'm blanking at the moment

another supra owner (this one a legend in the supra mythos) joining the 996tt ranks...

Thanks Chuck. I can live with no Glove Box or Cup holders. Question for you and others. Any negative side effects to scrapping the caps for "the track"? Meaning, does the computer freak out and go in limp home mode or something? Once I get the car I will surely want to mod it and I would rather run some leaded race gas at high boost.

As far as being "a legend in the supra mythos", not sure I agree but thanks for the compliment, at least I think it's a compliment

i guess it's a compliment depending on who you ask from the ol supra email list days

the porsche ecu is no supra ecu; some things i've encountered:

- you can install a boost controller but the ecu still has its boost maps. you need to get those re-programmed.
- there's a 1.4 boost limit; after which, the ecu shuts down the throttle body. you need to remove this barrier; afaik, only Protomotive & Evo have successfully done this.
- there used to be a rash of MAF failures; some say it was oil-based intake kits; others say the signal was 'full', the wire would get over-heated, and the MAF would go out.
- you can't permanently defeat PSM afaik; it will always come on when braking & sliding.
- you can convert to RWD w/o too many issues
- i'm sure there's other stuff i'm missing at the moment

there are no stand-alones where you can do this yourself. since you're AZ-based, you will probably become very good friends w/ the guys at Evo.

also, it's unclear what the upper limit is for boost on the stock block... 1.4 seems to be a good rule of thumb but mine has reached over 1.55 and it's still alive

HAHA! I would say that if you asked the TX Supra guys then it wouldn't be a compliment, but I actually get along with them now We did have some heated TX VS AZ wars in the Supra world in the past, FUN FUN!

The limitations (safeguards) to the ECU kind of suck, but I was expecting something along those lines. How much power will the stock turbos support?
