996tt vs. 997s
996tt vs. 997s
Hi all. Well ive driven both cars and need to decide which i want to go with. I am coming from a 99 c2 996 with coil overs and gt3 bars. Anybody have or have had both cars? I would like to get some opinions. I think they are both truely awesome cars. The 997s has slightly crisper handling, but the tt seems like it has tons of grip. I also have a posiiton on the 997 gt3 list, but think its going to be a little out of my range after all is said and done, plus i am not sure how good a daily driver it will be even with the PASM.
Thanks,
Todd

I am pretty sure in this forum you will have most people saying get the tt. For me the modability of the tt is a big factor. I aslo prefer the overall looks of the 996. Stock for stock I was not that impressed with the 997 S compared to a the turbo.
todd, the three cars you mention are all very different animals. I had the same thoughts as you initially. I looked at the 997, then the S, then damn the 4S. Then realized man I am in used TT area or even a GT3!
It really depends on what YOU are looking for. I'll keep this short and tell you why I went with the TT......horsepower and modability. This car is the best of all worlds and a compromise of all worlds. The bottom line is it is a great daily driver (GT3 is not) with awesome horsepower (997S light on the hp) that with few upgrades is also a good track car.
If you dont want new and are a hp junkie the TT is for you. If you are a REAL track guy its the GT3. If you want a lesser engine block that is not up to the TT or GT3 standard and just want to drive back and forth to work in a nice new porsche ......997 or cayman.
good luck

I would go for the 997s. I have had 5 996's and three of them were 996tt. IMO, the new 997s is a much better feeling car than the 996tt(stock form)
I think the 997s is a much better driving car as far as handling and the exhaust note is much nicer than the 996tt.
And as far as speed goes, the stock 996tt is just a hare faster if any than the 997s. If I had to buy one it would be the 997s over the 996tt..

I raced a 997S, not that it was a fair race by any means, but he asked for it...
As Craig once said, I put "bus lenghts" on him. It was so bad, I could see his headlights shrinking.... poor guy didn't even have his plates yet

Umm..no offense Monsoon...but their is no comparsion when it comes to SPEED between the turbo vs the S. The turbo is a beast! and obviously faster. I know the straight, road results of the two. But I think people think it's a close race, maybe, on the track...which it very well may be. I would personally take the turbo! Keep us posted on your decision!
For daily driving I would be very tempted to get the 997S..of course it is not as fast as the TT...it's not even close...but it is a more modern well riding car (imo)...and gorgeous too...I loved my test drive and wanted one but I don't put many miles on and am addicted to the power of the TT...

I doubt no one on a 996 Turbo forum would say they would rather have the 997 S and not the Turbo. The power and grip is so great!
But I can say someting good of the 997 S too. Turbo's crazy straightline speed might take something away from the whole driving experience, especially if you take a twisty route and enjoy the bends. Yes it's fast(er) but it lacks a bit the crispier handling.
According to Sport Auto's test on a short track (like Hockenheim) with the same driver the 997 S is as fast as the Turbo (well the S was 0.3 seconds faster). And on a longer course where's more straights the Turbo is much faster (9 seconds faster).
I would test drive the Turbo, the 996 GT3 (one of the greatest drivers car but not the best daily driver!) and the 997 S before making your decision. All of them are great cars so you can pick any of those and be happy!
But somehow I think you will get the Turbo
