Improving driving feel

I am interested in trying to improve the feel of the tt. In my opinion, there is way too much assist on the clutch and a little too much on the steering. The problems with the shifter are easily fixed with the short shift kits. I'm, going to try the B&M first and if I need to, I will go underneath the car for further shortening as well.

How can you improve the clutch feel and steering feel?

Change out the turbo suspension for the GT2/GT3 suspension as applicable.

As for the clutch, single mass with lightened flywheel. If you want more feel then get a puc clutch.

I don't like the assist either... The GT2/3 without the assist feel much better to me...

Right now, something is wrong my my clutch actuator (I think) because the clutch feels almost unassisted at times and is really spongy when I engage it quickly. My dealer thinks it's slipping (just by engaging it in a stationary position)...but a few hard runs It's definetly not slipping and holding fine.

cjv...Any thoughts on this? I don't know the hydraulic clutch system that well...but anything that rings a bell off the top of your mind?

Chris,

I don't have an answer about the hydralic actuated clutch. I will ask Rob. Maybe if Stephen is around he could answer.

Msindi,

When I am refering to the suspension change, I wasn't refering to dampers, sway bars etc. I was refering to all the other components like trailing arms, camber assembly, castor parts, monoballs, etc. These are the parts that really make the GT2/3 perform better. This is where the "feel" is different. From there you have to address the rest of the suspension, coils, dampers, sway bars, brakes, etc. Oh, don't forget the lighter wheels.

Chad,
On the subject of suspension components ... I might be imagining this, but weren't you looking into some aftermarket longer lower control arms a while ago? If I am not making this up, did you ever find them? I think that some of my sensors were affected when I lowered my car that might be corrected if I had longer lower control arms. Maybe I should make this a new thread.

Bob,

The arms on the GT2/3 are longer arms. Yes, I installed them. Yes, they will affect the sensors. We had to relocate them.

The reward is the car handles like nothing else we have seen.

CJV, will you start a new thread describing in detail the suspension changes you have made in progression, why, the final affects, and the approximate cost? I am very interested and think others would be also.

I am talking more from an assist standpoint. I think there is just too much boost which is killing the feel, ie. the controls are too light. The clutch is way too easy to depress and you can't feel the engagement to modulate clean starts (slippage) easily. I also think the contact point is far too high in the travel but that I could live with if I could feel something. So, I’m not talking car feel, I’m talking control feel right now.

Chad, I too would like to see a specific thread on your suspension changes and your evaluation as to their effects. I think that my own problems cropping up related to ABS and PSM could have been avoided if I knew about the need to replace the lower control arms at the time I lowered the car.

Last summer, I inadvertantly flat spotted the fronts of my relatively new set of MSC's when the ABS failed. Of course this happened the morning of our local Porsche club's time trial, giving me only part of one practice run on street tires before making my runs. My current theory is that this happened as a result of the ABS sensors being affected by lowering the car.

You have already shared so much of your experience with us, I hate to ask you to do more, but given the number of 6speeders who have cars with lowered and/or otherwise mod'd suspensions, I think the education you could give us would be very beneficial and very much appreciated. Thanks!

Thanks Chad...

I'll try and give Rob K. a call too...If this stealer of mine is going to say it's a clutch, I'm going to get something with more holding power.

Thanks,
Chris

In addition to other stuff already mentioned above, the EVO stage 1 clutch also really helps clutch feel. More firm, but not too firm.

Hi Chris,

I don't have the lighter flywheel. Just the stocker.

The take up point doesn't change at all.
