Found this thread in " search " and thought it might help some of the newer owners of the 996T around here. ( Both the topic and the useful search option. )
I heard this on a few 996Ts ( not all ) and I have a sound like what is being described here.
I don't like it either. Like described in this thread, when you start the car it isn't there, as the car idles down you hear it. I have a TIP so it isn't the clutch. I can't hear it when I drive or rev the engine but it doesn't mean it goes away.
I was told it was an " idle pulley ". I don't know what that is or if the car even has 1. I was told by a guy who has a Sharkwerks 650+ HP 01. He said he changed his pulleys out and it went away. Plus he has a custom exhaust that would help hide any noise from the engine,
Now that this thread is a few years older has any1 had more or less problems w/ this? I have put close to 6,000 miles on my car since Oct, 09 and it runs awesome! Just has this annoying sound at idle. I did have it scoped by a mechanic and he said the sound was coming from the cavity where the timing chain is located. But he couldn't say for sure what it was or that it wasn't just a sound resinating from another part of the engine to the hollow area around the timing chain location.
Anyway, that is what I have found out. Nothing of real comfort and or the source of the problem. The only thing is I have been driving the car w/ no problems and that is starting to give comfort that wasn't there when I got the car.
What say you?

What did it cost to get fixed? Did it go completely out or did you get to it before then?
Right, but that noise would not go away when the motor is revved...
Timing Chain.
Mine has made this noise at idle for as long as I've had the car. I've heard other 996TT in person and all that I've been around have made this sound. Totally normal for this car and nothing to be worried about. I suppose that after all this time I might worry if the sound suddenly stopped.

Is this the noise we are talking about? I hate it...

It's hard to tell in these youtube videos, but that sounds like it.
You can also hear it in this europipe video- when he starts it and the idle stabilizes... Basically at 8 seconds.

I thought my Turbo had a bit of a rattle when started also. I took it to Hans at RUF, and he told me it's the intermediate shaft and is totally normal on the 996TT - they are just "rattly" when started. I'll take his word for it over most others. They did a full PPI for me and found absolutely nothing wrong.
How funny that there is videos about it!? That's pretty much it as far as I can tell. It just sounds awful to me. But I have got use to it till I pull through a drive thru window and hear it. I've always figured it was there at all RPMs but the engine and exhaust sounds would drown it out?
Like I said, I've put about 6,000 miles on it and it runs great! It does make me save my mad $ to get an aftermarket exhaust asap! After talking to Todd at Protomotive in Harrison Ar I'm am really looking foward to getting my car over there!

I had the same noise. The thrust bearings were worn where the intermediate shaft spun on. As were the lifters and camshaft on the passenger side. Engine was replaced under warranty, and out of pocket 10k. Maybe try a thicker oil. I found a good post on rennlist that talked about crank thrust bearing failure and they mention the intermediate thrust bearing problem too. New reman motor doesn't have the rattle, so maybe they fixed the problem...
