Decisions Decisions... need some 6speed help
Joe, its not an issue about whether or not you CAN do the turbo now...its that you WILL be able to do the turbo LATER and that NOW while you are still in college, you could just find something a bit less risky...even with the low miles, i just wouldnt buy something like that from someone you dont know....getting a cheaper car from a Porsche dealer is a different story though...
Joey!
I admit you should go for a used Cayman S...it's the perfect car for young guys and enough powerful to have a lot of fun. the 996 TT would be a too much for a 19 year old...I suppose.
Yes, I suggest you to get a Cayman S!

996 turbos are relatively bullet-proof. In 4 years I didn't have a single issue with mine. I changed plugs once and did normal service, that was it. BUT when things go wrong they go wrong big. just doing a cluch can get pretty costly. And mods aren't cheap either...a chip is $3-4K, exhaust and wheels, each about the same. Tires $500-700 each... you get the idea.
I am driving a cayman S now, and love love love the thing. I miss the brute power of my modded turbo at times, but the cayman really handles a while lot better, mods are cheaper, and it has a warranty. You can get a new S for $60k no problem, dealers are discounting them huge. Many selling at or near invoice on the east coast.
on the other hand, if I was 19 and had $60k in cash I'd find some other way to spend it. Something that will appreciate. Maybe a small business or real estate. Grow the $60 in a $600 and then buy any car I wanted by 25. But maybe you are doing that too... so I'll stay on topic.

I agree with dave...also, the resale of your cayman(if you get that) will be conciderably higher then a similarly priced turbo...selling a 3 yr old cayman will be way easier then an 8 yr old turbo...
EDIT...found out that Cayman exhaust systems are litterally HALF the price of the Turbo Exhaust systems...

I know how bullet-proof those babies are, my dad's has had 6k miles in the last 5 months and nothing has gone wrong whatsoever.
As far as me being a 19 y.o driver, I do agree with you that a Cayman is more "fitting" for me. Also if I miss the power of the Turbo with the Cayman, I can always hop in my dad's car for a bit. The handling the Cayman does seem enticing...
As far as the money thing goes, it's not 60k liquid, its more like high 30's+selling my M3 (which isn't the same because to get 60k, I'd be without a car). Like I said in my first post, I'd keep my M3 in addition to either an E46 M3 or NA 996 Coupe. If I did a Cayman/S or Turbo, I'd have to sell it (anybody looking for a SMOKING E36 M3?!).
If it were 60k in cash, I'd probably be doing what you said EVEN THOUGH I have the real estate thing covered (dad's been doing it forever so I'm a mini R.E. guru).
So in affect, if the Turbo was really really REALLY worth it, I'd probably be able to do it.
Now, the maintainence of the Turbo (being out of warranty), given no BIG problems, won't be too killer since I'd be consolodating cars. Going from two insurance's, two cars being gassed, two cars' tires, two car's problems. (Even though the miles are split... it will probably equal one Turbo).
Thanks y'all!
Joe

Dude, I know! They are both sounding really good. Tomorrow should be a very telling day.
I don't agree with the resale thing though. A 60k Turbo is a VERY depreciated car... as in over 50%. With NA 996's steadily in the HIGH 30's and lower 40's (and up...), Turbos can not go much further. I'd say in 5 years my Turbo would be worth around 45 at the least (somebody tell me what you think about that). My cayman on the other hand will be 5 years old and will I have taken the BIG hit... let's consevatively say it will depreciate 30%... it will only be worth 42k. That's a very forgiving estimate too. So I think they are very comparable in the big picture... put in 60, take out something in the 40's.
I'd rather do that than pick some bad stocks and have 45 at the end of the five years... because five years of driving a Porsche is closer to being worth it, while watching your statements steadily fall isn't.
TURBO all the way. You won't regret it - get extended warranty if possible. Turbo has AWD so if this is your only car, it may help in the winter depending on where you live. Come to think of it, I would never drive my Turbo in the snow. Better put aside a few grand for a beater as well if you don't already have one.
I’d suggest the Cayman S under your circumstances. Or the new Boxster S, with the same 3.4 motor, if you want to enjoy the extra dimension of top down fun.
The main reason – You will learn to drive a sportscar and exploit its very respectable limits. If you get a turbo, it may just become “point and shoot”.
The TT’s limits are so high that a little experience would be a good thing. One guy in our club really learned to drive his Boxster S well. When he got a used TT, he transffered all those skills and got some crazy trap times. And could really enjoy what the TT could offer, safely. Good luck.

One thing that you havent really said is wether you are a modder or not. For me it came down to my budget and my ultimate need to mod. I had about the same in my budget. I could have either had a bone stock 996tt or a heavily modded and customized 996 NA.
Since I can't resist the need to mod and I wouldn't be able to afford to buy and mod a turbo on my budget, I decided to buy an 02 targa and mod the hell out of it. What I will end up with is a completley custom car that is faster than most cars on the road. It wont be as fast as a turbo, but since its much faster than my previous car, a 1998 BMW Mroadster (moded to hell) I am very happy.
I would say if your happy with a stock car you can't go wrong with the turbo or the Cayman S. But if you have the mod bug like I do, I'd say an 02 coupe and mod the hell out of it. Prices on the non turbos are quite reasonable now.
