Decisions Decisions... need some 6speed help
Prob your options should be a 3.6L Carrera, a Cayman S or a 996TT. I would pick from one of those. no matter which of those three you choose, you will have a GREAT and AMAZING car. if you are not going to mod, or mod lightly, get the Carrera or Cayman S. if youa re going to mod, get the TT for sure, just so much more potential. good luck!

I'm starting to look for a new car. I'm 19, no tickets, a pretty mature driver overall. I know that sounds like I think I know what I'm doing and I'm superdriver, but that's not how I'm thinking... it's just backround info. I'm mainly driving on backroads beacause that's all we have around here (keep that in mind) in surburban Philly/Wilmington.
I currently drive a modded E36 M3 ('95). The car has Turner Motorsports'
57hp power package, in a straight line, it definately keeps up with a 3.4l 996 cab. I've been given several options. It's a lot to think about with out some outside advice. Here is what I'm looking at. I have 40K to use. That means I can keep my car and use the 40k for something in addition, or sell my car for 15 (ish) and have about 60 (we could do 60 if it's definately worth it).
The options
1) 996 coupe
My dad had a 2000 996 cab, which he was going to give me... but I'm not a cab. kind of guy. I know that sounds really bad, but we'd had the car for four years, it was black (which you can NEVER have looking perfect), and was pretty stripped, not to say that's a bad thing since the car is for driving-- but it was pretty boring. He ended up trading it for a 996tt cab in April (Brandywine Porsche... I'd suggest them for potential buyers btw). And at the time, I LOVED my M3 and would have had to get rid of it if I took the 911.
HOWEVER, the 2002+ 3.6L 996 COUPE. I've been seeing more and more facelifted 996's delving in the low 40's. I've never driven one for an extended period of time, but have been in several, many times.
2) E46 M3
This car was what we were going to get in the original plan, and still might. I was thinking though--I'm pretty sure that any of the other alternatives will continue to stay exciting and fresh for a much longer time. The novelty of the M3 has worn off (a little tiny bit) because I've realized it would be another car that I'd end up modding... like everything. After 5,6,7 years of owning it, I've the same thing I have in the E36. Still a great car, but a niche car. It would take a lot of sell it, and it wouldn't be stock. At that point, I'd have a ton of money in two cars that won't be worth nearly what any other alternative would be.
3) Cayman/ Cayman S
This option appeals to me in the I could probably do a new Cayman or used Cayman S. The cars supposedly handle like nothing else, they definately have an interesting/modern look, and they are part of the new wave of Porsche (is that a good thing though?). But do you think I would always look at the 911's as the big dogs or will the performance of the Cayman/S keep my head straight. I guess I'll know more about that Sat after I drive both Caymans and a facelift 996.
4) 996tt
I know, I know. The thing is... HAS ANYBODY SEEN THE PRICES LATELY?! There are 2001's w/ 30k miles on the clock for $60,000.00! Obviously 60k isn't chump change, but I'd be getting a pretty heavily depreciated car, so from a monetary POV, it's not a bad deal. Also, the performance is supercar material. Drew (Sechsgang) picked his up last thursday (happy 1 week anniversary man...) and the coupe is simply amazing. I've logged a good 2500 miles on my dads car in the 5 months we've had and they are addicting. The more you drive it, the more you like it. It's definately a car to keep for 10+ years. A very special, very impressive car. Obviously no one can use everything it has to offer here in the states, but for the 2 or 3 times a week you really get on it, it will definately reward you (... after mastering how to drive a Pcar-- like 1% of the Porsche drivers).
Sorry for the LONG post, but that's my dilemma.
Mods, please keep this hear since it's the most frequented section here, and these guys know what they are talking about.
Drew, I KNOW WHAT YOUR THOUGHTS ARE AND WE DON'T NEED THEM HERE!!! (He's all for the new Cayman... not a bad idea)
I really think I might be infected with carholism. When someone finds a cure... give it to Martin first though....
Thanks a million guys

i just saw a red cayman s and it looked awesome...then I floored my turbo...uhhh...commentless...
I think in the end its really going to come down to what the best car for you as a DRIVER is rather then other people's (including mine) opinions. If I HADNT gone through the racing schools and get the exp that I did, I would not have ended up with the turbo as like someone said...it would just be a point a shoot car...I would have most likely purchased a cayman or boxter as its balance is second to none and it can make a decent or good driver into a great driver with the right training. That being said...WITH that training AND a Turbo...you are a real force to be messed with...
Well go to brandywine tomorrow and well see what your thinking AFTER you drive the cars. Im sure you wont make the wrong decision.

haha.. i bought mine at 21, same decisions you were making... but ended up getting a 4S... i was looking into M3s, CLK55, CLS55, E55, SL55, turbo, boxster... etc... but at the end.. couldn't really justify spending that much for a turbo and still wanted a 911, so i took the 4S
but then again.. used turbos weren't that cheap a year ago...

i think i'm going to S/C my 4S soon... the EVOs group buy is very tempting... only 8.5k for parts plus install labor?
yah, come to think about it.. for the amount of money the S/C is going to cost me... yah, get the turbo =P

Get the TT, but get a beater too. A 19 year old driving a Turbo will raise some eyebrows one way or another. So under certain circumstances a low profile car might be a must.
