996 TT with...straight pipes...pure sex.
We had straight pipes on my dad's turbo for a few months but he couldn't drive it on the highway due to the drone so we went back to the stock exhaust. You could hear his car from 3 miles away with the straight pipes! We now have a custom exhaust that I'll take pics of one of these days. It's almost as loud of the straight pipes but the new one has 100 cell cats.
I converted over from 100 cell fabspeed cats and their straight pipes to the FVD straight pipes sans cats. The car sounds (to me and everyone at the track) AWESOME!! Car spools fast, pulls hard, runs well, end of story.
I also drive this car to work, lunch, dinner and everywhere I can and have had no problems with the noise and never a negative comment including the local police.
Just listen to a Harley the next time they go by, will make my set up seem quiet.
It is a matter of personal preferences. I chose my set up for ONE REASON ONLY best performance period. And I have not been disappointed.
Also, think about this. These pipes cost $400. Bolt on yourself in the garage in less than 1 hour. No back pressure, 50 pounds off *** of the car, if it were not for the "noise" could anyone say this was not the way to go!
I think not...........enjoy ............tom

Straight pipes.
Tom,
What did you do about the CEL since you are now running without cats? Why did you change from the 100cell/straight pipe combo to just straight pipes was the difference in sound and performance significant? I was considering your previous setup on my incoming GT2 but...I want the performance gain and reduced weight in the rear-end but what issues stem from the CEL? I assume when you need to get the car smog-checked you'd simply reinstall the cats?

Tom, put mine on today & TOOK THEM OFF TODAY!!, just to dame loud,
for the track yes.
Nelson, go with your set up of the 100 cell cats and straight pipes, best set up for an emission checking state. Also the cats will make sure you have no CEL's. In my case when I had the ECU flashed it negated the rear O2 sensors and so no need for the cats at all and no CEL's. My car is 95% track driven.
As for the sound, I think the car sounds great. The sound at idle and controlled driving is not bad and awesome at WOT.
Tom sorry to hear that but I think you need to give it some time. Initially it seems bad but as you start to loose your hearing it really isnt that bad!
