I think 03-turbo911 has it exactly right. The Tip can be as quick/fast or faster the the 6-speed with the right mods (just like Sharkey!), but it is less involving to do so. The buttons just don't take the place of the clutch and shift lever, but many Ferrari and Lambo owners prefer the paddle shifters for their cars (I know, those are true automated manual transmissions with a clutch, but the push of a button or pull of a lever are both way different than shifting a manual transmission).

We'll have to see how people feel when Porsche comes out with PDK. I still say, drive them both and buy what you like.
