Tiptronic or 6 speed?
Tiptronic or 6 speed?
I'm about to pull the trigger on a 2005 Turbo S, but can't decide between a tiptronic or 6 speed. Is a tiptronic slower than a 6 speed? Is there any performance loss with the tiptronic? Thanks in advance for any input.
Unlike the 997tt, there is definite performance loss with the 996tt Tip. It's a pretty good automatic transmision, but it's still a torque converter automatic. With 5 forward gears vs the manual's 6 forward gears, the lower gears are taller and accentuate turbo lag (if you don't "brake torque/boost" your launches), plus the torque converter adds to the drivetrain power loss.
If most of your driving is in heavy traffic (commuting), and you are going to use the car for daily driving plus some fun on the side, the Tip may work well for you. There are many who get by fine with the manual for daily commuting in traffic, too.
Bottom line: drive both the Tip and manual, and see which one suits your needs the best. Great car either way. Good luck with your purchase.

I have a 02 with the X50 and the tip. When I test drove my first Porsche it was an 01 six speed (not x50). I did not like the clutch; way to light and like an on/off switch. Heck the gas pedle was stiffer than the clutch! I have an 03 Cobra and the heavy clutch's suite my driving style. Thats just me... I have had people drive my Cobra and say MAN this clutch is like a dump truck clutch. I went to another dealer the following day and test drove the car I have now and what can I say I bought the car that day. I never do that. Since the purchase I have modded the Porsche, Hybrid turbo's, ECU, 5 bar FRP, BOV's, Greddy boost controller, filter, and exhaust. The car is an absoulte ball to drive. I say drive them both and decide which one suites YOU the best. Good luck.
I daily drive my CTS-V (6 speed) with no problems. Heck, I even had an Explorer Sport 5-speed!! I can't stand autos, but thats just me...
If you like control over your car, I say get the 6-speed IMHO. Otherwise, get the tip. Definately test drive both before you decide.

both versions are fine. choice what you prefer to drive. several TT's at the track I mostly drive at are tips and I sure cant keep up with them. So even in very high performance situations either trans version wont disappoint.
Again, comes down to personal preferences.

That's good to hear Tom. I haven't had my tip on a track but I couldn't figure out why it would't work. It's like no other auto I have driven; except a M6 that I test drove before this purchase.
I've got a manual transmission 911 Turbo and a tiptronic Cayenne Turbo. I highly prefer the manual trans for the 911; to me, it just wouldn't feel like a sports car without it. In contrast, I love the tip for the Cayenne; given that I use the truck mostly for "cruising," the tip delivers a very relaxing drive.
You'll get great performance out of either transmission. I think it really comes down to how involved you want to be with the driving experience on an everyday basis.

One of the reasons that made me sell my '05 turbo S was that it was a Tip. It bore me to death and with the heavy 996 turbo feel, conspired to rob alot of the joy of throwing it around corners. It's just as fast as a sixspeed from the few times that I've went head to head against those in the track.

I've got both.
