Rattle behind the steering wheel

On my 01 996TT, I have a rattle behind the steering wheel that goes away if I put pressure on the steering wheel. The noise is mostly at Highway speeds over 20mph and when I hit minor imperfections in the road.

The U joint under the dash is tight but it looks like there is some tool marks under there from someone else working on it.

I'm wondering if it is the wheel or the steering column. Has anyone run into this?

Is there anything I should do before attempting to pull the steering wheel?

Thanks in advance for your help.
