Although you can "mimic" the set-up of a GT2 with a turbo,
They just don't feel the same--big difference in my opinion.
I do love my turbo and will keep it but if I had, had more money,
I would buy a GT2: Nothing is better IMHO. I do love the way the
GT3's drive also but not enough power for me.

Marty, you need to drive my car. It'll change your mind.

But I agree with you. If the price delta between the two cars wasn't as great as it was when I bought my TT, I would've went with a GT2 instead. It's a phenomenal car from the factory, but it just wasn't $40k or $50k better......to me.

I have a question GT2 vs tt Suppose:

Both cars set to the same power, say 550 whp
Both suspentions modded as good as it can get
Both on equal tires
GT weights a little less
Both have roll cage
tt has the AWD

if driven around the same track which will run better lap times??

1) novice level driver
2) intermediate level driver
3) advanced driver
4) pro driver

I am just wondering if the AWD is better or not in most track driving.

Well coming from me, its an easy and self explanatory question, it will take an Advanced driver to keep the same pace with an AWD turbo on the track let's say, pushed at about 8/10's of the car's capability, especially taking into consideration its got 550whp and the same tires as the turbo (if street's, then bad news for GT2) ..

The Turbo is so amazing because it doesnt hesitate to perform at its fullest, it masks beginner.intermediate drivers because it does everything SO DAMN WELL, and half the reason why i never grew to love it so much, the challenge just wasnt there IMO!

The GT2 on the other hand is nothing short of thrilling every minute driving it, like i said and others, its a totally different driving experience! Although, Scott's im sure is right there because his seems to be dialed in real well, has good suspenion and lightened it up.. I was in Tom (Topgun's) full weight X50 car with JIC's dialed in, and it handled flat while being very smooth, night and day from my old turbo with H+R's. Thing is there are endless setups and capability with both cars, its so hard to judge, but the turbo will be easiest to get the fullest out of on the track, street or wherever, i must admit!

When retrofitting an LSD (guard, GT3/2 unit, other) to a 996TT, do you have to alter the PSM/replace a control module with that of a GT2?

Sorry i didnt answer your diff/lsd question, im honestly not sure which people upgrade to in the turbo's, and dont know anyone who has even upgraded theirs!

Try giving Fabryce at GMG Racing a PM, i think he mentioned this stuff before, not sure!

Will definitely have a better time in a TT. The lack of PSM makes pushing the GT2 hard impossible without spinning out. Miss an apex, come too hot into a reducing radius turn, or simply too much gas and not enough contersteer and you'll be in the dirt or worse. These are FACTS.

I have been to the track in a Miata, Twin Turbo Rx7 and an E46 M3 (with the stability shut off) a few times and never spun out. Not even once. I can assure you that the TT is a handful due to the rear engine and huge power/torque. The PSM kept me from spinning on multiple occasions and I still missed a turn and decided to go straight into the dirt (better than spinning into it). Everyone is going to have a different opinion. I suggest you get a TT and track it. The decision will be made for you. You can always upgrade.

A friend of mine (Fanman) on this board told me that approx 1/3 of all GT2s have been in an accident. I can not vouch for the data and do not know if it is accurate or its source so take that data with some skepticism.

Regarding the LSD, you can definitely use it with your PSM. Some Euro TT models came with an LSD as an option.

Ari,
appreciate the input (especially from someone who'se tracked an FD before...those things were damned fun ). Will probably end up with a turbo. I know the GT3 would make a better track car, but the turbo has more modding potential...i can always grab something else for wheel to wheel racing (something less wallet intensive if i wad it up).

In any event i doubt i'll find a GT2 for sale in canada/US within stretchable budgetary means so turbo...weight reduction...rwd conversion and LSD for the win?

Thanks just asking, I have a 01 tt (pss9 +HR's)
and a e46 M3, I have had a e30 m3 and a e36 m3 and have tracked them all. The tt is (to me) kind of nicer to drive compared to the M3. My e30 M3 was just flat fun on the track. I have been toying with yanking the front dif out of my tt, I may try it with the driveshaft out first though.

I pulled my driveshaft a while back. I might try my next track event is AWD and see if it helps. I saw no benefit to AWD on california roads. My car is now faster and seems to launch just as hard with less wheel hop.

LSD will cost you. Something like 10K I think? Someone correct me if I'm off my rocker.

Unlike other cars, the rear engine makes the rear tires stick. If you do a burn out, you will see two tire marks... Wait until you get one and decide. I was making all your same decisions 18 months ago. I went with an X50 for ease of modding, spent 12K on ---> engine, suspension, a used set of rims and new tires and I'm a happy camper. After tracking my car a week ago I do not want a GT2. Maybe if I continue to track and think I have exceeded the car's cpabilities, but I doubt that will happen.

i think you are a tad off with that price (that price would accuratly reflect the price of a new transmission). An LSD should be about 1200$ for a good jap lsd....so factor in porsche tax...and the guard/PMNA unit will probably be 2400$

oh...and happy st. patty's day...i'm off to bed as the green liquid has finally driven my brain to its breaking point.

thanks for all the input so far..keep it comming

I actually hate PSM and any tractionc ontrol system when on track and even on the road, i never get into trouble like that and if i have i have quickly recovered! (lucky? maybe, but knowing a car inside and out is key)

I cant wait till end of march for my first HPDE in the GT2, car is being set up suspension wise perfectly right now, cornerweighted and balanced, rake in front and then some new tires, Michelin PS1's suck! Hopefully i wont be screaming about traction issues in the warm weather, cause right now its flat out scary, even my turbo with some damn good power never had traction issues, that's where i think the lack of PSM , diff/lsd and so on come into play, i might be crazy but i think its even better in the turbo that there wasnt any traction issue and still being RWD
