TT first time to the strip!
TT first time to the strip!
So, the weather finally cleared here and I decided to put down some baseline runs before I go modding the hell out of it. Car is stock except for a BMC filter and B&M short shift kit - hardly worth mentioning. I got up early and made my way to Shakespeare County Raceway, which is about 100mi north of here and made for a nice, if cold, early Sunday morning drive.
At the track there was a wide variety of cars (this was opening weekend for the track). As you would expect a lot of Hondas, Subarus, and Mitsus, but there were also some older American cars running big blocks and lots of NOS. Like your typical American strip, except the cars were a LOT slower.
So onto the runs. I got 9 in today, and the car stayed consistent 12.7-12.9 @ 111-113mph throughout with one awful run where I missed third and then double-clutched and went into 5th (hey, you try speed-shifting left-handed!). 3rd gear is also a little "crunchy" anyway. I was surprised with the amount of wheel-hop I experienced, and had to experiment with slipping the clutch out until I was satisfied that I wasn't going to break anything. Wheel-hop or not, my 60's were consistent 2.0-2.1, which was kind of disappointing because I used to rip 1.7-1.8 with my AWD Talon back in the day. PSM off, but normal tire pressures with the PZeros - will experiment with 20-25psi all around next time I go out (what's the consensus here on drag tire pressures?). Also, full weight with spare and tool-box etc etc etc. Didn't get a chance to weigh her, but she's a porker right now!
So, here are the best slips. This one is best ET:

And this one is best MPH:

So, the burning question I have is: is my car tired, or is the Motor Trend time for a stock 996TT complete fantasy?
If I had launched hard I could have taken a tenth or 2 off. 12.5-12.6 maybe if I was lucky, but the other times poted for stock TTs seem completely out of my reach...
Anyway, on go the silicone hoses, BOV, and exhaust over the next two weeks. Maybe I'll bump up the boost a bit as well, and see if she won't crack 11's next time out! MARKSKI, I'm gunning for you!

Congrats on having the courage to try it and post it.
I remember the disappointment I had when I ran several 60-130's
and my best was 10.96 seconds (although this is better than stock
by 1.5 seconds which is about right). I have not tried drag racing so
I do not know if the 2.0 or 2.1 is lame or about right. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for the kind words Marty. Yeah, I don't know what to make of it. With the stock times from MT of 11.9 and another member at 12.27 both at 116mph, I'm wondering if my car is a bit worn out. Maybe I just need to get the extra weight out (maybe 100lbs) and work on my launch. That'll get my ETs down, but the trap speed still won't be there.
The launch. Eh, cold track, tires at normal pressure, and the first time out. I'll shave a few tenths off of that, but the wheelhop brings back bad memories of shattered axles and motor mounts. If I can get low 1.9s I'll be happy. No need to abuse it too much, it is still under warranty afterall
Anyway, I guess it's good to document all of this so I can tell exactly what effect each addition has on performance. It's easier to beat on something when you know that you can swap in a new tranny or axles for cheap. Maybe I don't even want to know what one costs for a TT

YOu just need some practice...
drop the tire pressure to 20 psi. take out some weight like the spare tire.
rev the car up to 2800 rpms .... do a slight burn out DRY - just before... and go all the way to 6500 rpms in each gear...
OH and shift fast.. very fast...

The 60' time can certainly be improved, but is nothing to be ashamed of given the weather, tires, and lack of practice. The trap speed does seem low, though. Especially if it's a bit chilly, where you'd expect to make more power.
Trap speed is usually pretty independent of ET or 60' time, and you're 5-6 mph off the usual value for a stock 996TT. Maybe losing boost?

MT is usually pretty good for their times. I had ran my E36 M3 at 14.1-14.3 stock. When I bought my evo back in 03 I was able to match the 13.5 quarter mile and our 1/4 track has really poor on traction. With ECU upgrade and exhaust my evo then ran in the 12.7's range. I know for a fact that my 911t will smoke my old evo based on pull. When I have time I can possibliy make some runs and post it for you.
Some things to consider.
1. With AWD you should be in the 1.8 range for 60foot times.
2. What boost is your guage showing. Perhaps it's your diverter valve leaking?
3. How are the tires? Bald, over inflated, horrible traction?
4. Your running preminum fuel?
So many things to consider.

Kenny (MrBlonde) ripped a 1.7-1.8 60 ft time from memory and drag races fairly extensively as a hobby.
I'd be more interested in the trap speed than anything else. Although I notice the US guys always runs slightly faster traps than here in Aust with stock cars usually. Could be the same thing, what was the altitude of the track? That could be a big factor.
Although I wouldn't worry about it really, just good that you got out and had some fun with it

. Drag racing is hard on the cars but I like to run all my cars at least once just to see if had the stronger or weaker models.
The MT 11.9 run was an X50 car. They said, rev the snot out of it and drop the clutch, then ride out the wheel hop while trusting German enginneering. Not something most of us want to to do with out cars.

Under a fixed pressure and temperture, isn't the density of air the same? I recall reading steam tables which Enthalpy is based on pressure and temperature to determine energy.
Altitude matters, really it does. Do some research,
I have seen a stock vert run 12.4 @ 113 with a low 1.9 60-ft and @ 3800 lbs with driver. So the magazine times and trap speeds are very possible although it would take some pretty good driving to get 11.9 in a stock turbo.
