X50 as a platform for Mods?
X50 as a platform for Mods?
So I'm trying to decide between starting with an X50 car (and paying a little more) or just getting a a standard TT and using that as a starting point.
I'm not looking for massive power increases - over 650hp - but it would be nice if I could get to about 575- 600. I'd also like a quicker spool if possible.
Is the standard X50 hardware capable of 600hp with intake, software, header work and exhaust? At that level (or as close as I could get) would I be pushing the torque curve up the rev band? I drive on pretty crowded roads in the NYC area and rarely get to really wring a car out so low end grunt is still pretty critical for me.
Am I better simply getting a standard TT and adding a UMW or Evoms package with hybrid turbos?
TIA

Hybrids should give you less lag than the K-24's of an X50 but the lag is not bad especially if you add an intake.
Having an X50 car myself...and just IMHO...K24's are terribly laggy ... even after flashing / exhaust / intake. I suggest the UMW Stage II ZC (K16/K24)..."instant" full boost. Sub-second boost from 0.0 to 1.1 @ approx 2800 rpm ...
You won't get 600 at the wheels. For that you will need bigger turbos. With intake, software, header work (which will reduce lag) diverter valves and exhaust you might get to about 530 at the wheels, which is a very fast and great all around car. A new clutch and you should be good to go.
The X-50 is an excellent platform.

as for the turbos mine arent that laggy at all, they arent porsche k24's though, they were aftermarket (orton) I dont think my axles and driveshaft could take them coming in any sooner than they do now. 1rst and most of second are useless.
When I got my 590 rwhp GT2 nearly 4 months ago the power frightened me (I was spinning the back tires unintentionally all over the place). I ran on low boost (about 500 to the wheels) most of the time. Now I am completely used to high boost and 590. I actually want more power wuhahahaha.
It helps if I only drive her twice a week.

what i have a hard time understanding is how you can get 600hp from slapping on k24s on a regular 996, for example the awe kit, when chipping an x50 car only gives you 525 at best.
i know that the headers, exhaust, intake help but are they really worth 80 horses???
also awe claims 585 crank hp with just the k24 turbos and exhaust. do they use some version of GIAC software that is proprietary to them?

as discussed numerous times, if you get the EVO/IA/Sharkwerks GIAC stage IV kit (flash, exhaust, and optional headers, dv's, air box) you will be right "around" the 600hp at the crank mark. Exactly what you're looking for.
There are other great options, but since you already have the kkk24's from the x50 kit, this will save you some $$.

Depends on what you are after???
What is your performance history ?? (I.E. mine: This is my 4th Porsche turbo,
all of which I have IMMEDIATELY modified because they felt slow to me).
If the X-50 feels fast now, then if you did a nice exhuast and a ECU tune,
you would have a very quick, nice daily driver that would be "fairly fast".
Good luck, and as others have said, the X-50 is an excellent platform.
I would do what ^^^^^ Maxwell above says, otherwise there are VERY fast
cars in the city relatively close to you (JoeTwint, TopGun, and a couple of Protomotive cars that could frighten into keeping your car stock--LOL!)

I not sure how to quantify my performance history but my E55 feels plenty fast enough. Part of what I like about that car is the instant torque. No delay - ever - just instant pull from almost any rpm.
I'm just concerened that the supposed lag of the k24 might not feel as satisfying - especially since most of my driving is below 5k rpms...
What do other k24 owners think? Would they trade some top end power for a quicker spool?
BTW, I don't "have" anything yet - still trying to decide between the x50 kit and the standard TT as a starting point for mods.,
Thanks for all the help - I know this must be a boring conversation to the old guard around here...
