Theres been a lot of hype with reverse lips, but the stepped lip is stronger, and with the right design like BBS, it can be a successful design....











Just wish BBS made a 19" x 12" deep dish offset for the turbo.

Reverse Lip= Flat Lip Design.

Stepped = Tapered in, usually 2 steps.

We're talking the deep dish part.

How about these Kinesis? Think these Step Lips would look good on a Seal Grey C2? I'm trying to decide whether to keep them or sell them?

 

I think my prob with the step lip is that it makes the face look one size smaller than it actually is.

 

Exactly. With reverse lip you can run an 18 and oftentimes you would swear it's a 19. Best of both worlds ...

 

Heya Kirby if you want to see the difference, I'll clean up my rims and we can hook up somewhere and you can try mine on one side and yours on the other.. OK they won't fit quite right but just to give you an idea? I have to say, I like both.. I'm not into this whole "dish/bling" thing all that much anyways and the only reason I went with the R reverse lip style was because the centers are larger and work with my brake set up. The fact that people think they are 19s and have a great dish doesn't do much for me

Correct -- that's because the face is, in fact, a smaller diameter on a traditional (front stepped lip) wheel as compared to the same wheel with a reverse lip. As a result, standard wheels weigh approx 1-1 1/2 lbs less (due to their smaller center section)than the reverse lip version of the same wheel. Also, all wheels have to have a stepped rim half (either inside or outside) in order to mount tires.

 

So what's the benefit of a stepped lip over reverse, is it stronger?

 

Does a reverse drop ( straight outer lip ) wheel then have to be placed face down to mount the tire ? Is there then more risk of damage to the " shiny " side ?

 

The primary benefits are less unsprung weight and increased brake clearance over the comparable reverse lip wheel. Some "experts" also say it may be stronger (or at least the outer rim half may be less susceptible to bending), and tire installation is much easier with the traditional stepped lip wheel.
