noob question about oil pressure and usage...

I just picked up my turbo about two months ago now and see that I consume about a quart of oil every 2-3K miles...I do get on her quite a bit when I do drive but not all the time.

I also noticed that at speed my oil pressure sits just above 4 and usually stays in that area unless under 2K RPM....is all this normal and if not why and what can I do to fix the situation? The car has a bit over 40K on the clock...

Thanks!

Mike

My turbo eats oil as well, i have to add about a quart every 1.5-2 months. I asked the dealer and its normal for the car to do this, especially turbo cars in general. All of my cars snacked on oil during their lifetime

Yes, true...the previous owner explained this but it seems like it is eating more...I had a large cloud of oil on start up yesterday but the a$$ end of the car was sitting low so I thought that might be it...

is your oil pressure (guage all the way to the right) sit on 4 at or above 3K RPM? I want to make sure this is normal too...

I get an occasional smokey startup in my GT2, and the same used to happen in my 993TT. Even my Dad's '74 911 and '87 930 do this, so I would call it normal as long as you don't get it every time you startup.

Oil consumption is also similar here, a quart evey few thousand miles. I think it's just an inherent issue with the design of the Flat 6.

Not sure about what is normal for oil pressure, maybe someone else will chime in.

I put in at least a quart of oil every 1000 or so miles.

Pressure goes up with RPMS and then drops back down at idle. Normal.

mine is always higher than 4 or so. Much higher than my c2 was, but I guess it makes sense since it is dry sump vs. pan. I would think you would need more pressure to keep everthing lubricated since the crank is not sitting in oil.

Pressure on mine goes all the way then drops to around 4 aswell. Drinks 1qt for every 1,000 - 1,300 miles.

Around oil pressure, at idle it should be around 2.5, then i think the temp is right and the the best for the car. Also while driving it goes around 5 and 4. I heard this from a friend of mine that owns a 944 and explained to me how he heard is the best for these engines. Just had my car for 1 day and had to bring it to storage cause I had to leave the country.

Oil pressure at Idle should be 2.5? Mine sits at 1.

Is that normal?

Depends... When I've been at the track running hard, the oil pressure will drop below 2 at idle. I recently switched to Mobil1 TDT 5W40 and noticed that the pressure now stays at 2 or above, so maybe the recent changes in M1 0W40 are what you're seeing. So long as you have 10psi per 1Krpms, you should be OK.

My GT2 sits on about 4 at 3k rpm but occasionally climbs higher and then drops back just like some kind of pressure regulator cutting in and out.Does anyone else get this?
