Control Arm Ball Joint Removal

Hey Guys,
It has been a while since I have posted. I have been immersed in many other things and am only now getting back to the turbo. I am making some SUBSTANTIAL suspension changes and I have a question.

I need to break the control arm ball joint free from the upright. It is a wedge fit of course and I wanted to know if anyone has a picture or some insight as to the proper puller.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

You will need a scissor style like this. Make sure to get a quality one with a good course thread bolt.

Don,
THanks for the input, but that will not work with the 996 turbo. The upright is a one piece casting that the control arm ball joint bolts to. I have considered that type as well as common pullers and none of them seem appropriate to the task. The ball joint must be pulled out of the bottom of the upright. That means a puller must grab the control arm and push against the bottom of the upright in order to pull it off the bootom.

Any other thoughts or suggestions? Anyone?

Don,
Your scissor type would work if I could use it on the inside of the upright (towards the center of the car), however, the axle is in the way.

Ken,

The version you see will work. You can rotate the arms. I use one almost identical as this one.

Stephen,
It has been a really long time!!!! Good to hear from you!!!
Regarding the scissor ball joint separator, I am trying to do this without removing the control arms. I need to disconnect the uprights from the control arms at all four corners. When you say "rotate the arms", I assume you mean the control arms are disconnected at the chassis allowing them to rotate.

Is there a way to do this without removing the control arms???

And where can I buy that tool?

Best,
Ken

I rented mine at my local Shucks (Kragen) parts store for FREE. You just have to get it at the right angle. I used the one in the pic to do my car when I installed coil-overs.
