"twangy" noise when turning
"twangy" noise when turning
I've started noticing a slight twangy noise when I'm turning at low speeds. Sounds like a spring thats being stretched or twisted. Happens even on gradual turns, not necessarly at full lock... but only at very low speeds. I have JIC cross suspension which I figure might be the cause. Any solutions?

I have the same thing...I was told not to go to full lock with the JIC because it is putting pressure on the drop links...never really got an answer what the sound was but my upgraded links are still good to go.

Could be "coil bind"... not exactly sure what that means, but after I got my aftermarket suspension (ground control track kit, E36 M3) I had that same noise. My tech was able to do something about it... and now I don't have that noise anymore.
Maybe someone can elaborate on what "coil bind" exactly is.

theres a thread over at rennlist that describes a similar problem with PSS9s:

wross996tt suggested using the rubber bushings from the stock suspension. Has anyone tried this on JICs?

One likely cause is that coil springs *must twist* when they compress
or expand. The top of the spring must rotate a little like a steering
wheel. You can ask your shop to install a thin teflon disk or two between
the top of the spring and the perch. I have a little fancier part, a very
thin roller bearing unit between two thin plates. This completely stops
any squeak/graunch noise due to the spring-top rotation.

thanks Joe. I pulled out the rubber washers from my stock suspension and I'll have them add it my JICs.. hopefully that'll be enough.
Did you make that bearing plate yourself or is it something that can be purchased?

you would like the roller-bearing spacers for your
coil-overs.
