I don't have my license yet. I've made enough passes to get mine but I never did actually get it. The guy that does the certification in Houston goes around Houston to do his.

I'm going to be getting my NHRA license passes done this Fall. You must renew you license on a yearly basis or it will expire. Here is what I must do to get the license:
  • Come to the track in a vehicle that is NHRA legal to 8.50, For my Dodge, this includes, full cage that has been NHRA certified (swing out door bars are legal to 8.50), scatter shield on the tranny (this prevents the gears from slicing through the floor (and you) if the tranny grenades), window net (this prevents your arms from flopping out and being crushed in a rollover), kill switch on the rear of the vehicle (in case you're wrecked and they need to kill all power to the car), 5 point harnesses, helmet, neck collar, fire rated jacket, pants and gloves.
  • A full physical (this is to show that you won't drop dead when the car crosses the traps a 160+)
  • Blindfold Test (you must be able to shut off and escape from the vehicle while blindfolded in 15 seconds)
  • 6 passes...2 60' passes, 2 1/8 mile passes and 2 full 1/4 miles passes (both must be under 10 seconds and within a few 10ths of each other.

Quote: Kenny,

Can you explain what 4.4 is or entails?
Chad this has been answered by others. When your chassis guy makes up the rollcage it has to be inspected by an NHRA official to approve it. A full tech inspection results in an NHRA sticker as shown in another post.

If you use CM then you need to have the tech done before you paint it.

The lady loves me Normally she would throw anyone out. I've seen it before. But she just smiles and hands me my slip. I have my fire jacket/pants/etc.. on so I think that is enough for her. lol.

I've made friends with all the people at the track so it does help a little.

I've made friends with the folks at the track here too, we rent it all of the time. When I went 9.62, the race director met me at the slip booth and said laughingly "you're killing me, Joe, you know better than that, time to go get your license"

Guys, the safety regulations are there because in days gone by (when there were no rules or few rules) people out to have a goo time got hurt or killed.

Don't think it's smart to sidestep the NHRA rulebook on safety. It's there to save your life.

Going by these rules my car ( with the tequipment bar and harnesses)should be legit to 10.00.The E-Town track official told us we needed a door bar for anything under 11.50,which I couldn't understand because I had run last year (10's)that way. Does the bar need to be welded in?Wouldn't door bars make it a cage and not a bar which would be good to 8.50?

Tequipment is no good for NHRA because it has no door bars.

Tequipment is not up to NHRA standards. The rule book has the minimum tube dimensions and shows how the cage must be welded into the car.

I was all proud the first time I showed up at the strip with my NHRA certified cage. No more getting yelled at or told to slow it down or park it. So when I tell the tech guy that the car will run 9s, the first thing he says is "lemme see yer license." It's like they can read your mind.

So anyway, I got one.

Very Nice!!!

It makes things so much easier when you can run without worrying about getting kicked out.
