Disappointing dyno results for bone stock engine
Disappointing dyno results for bone stock engine
I took my '02 "normal" 996tt to the dyno shop today for a pre-mods baseline. I was hoping for 85% of 415, but the results were a bunch lower.
Engine:
- 15,800 miles
- bone stock except for Bailey diverters by previous owner.
- original spark plugs
- oil and filter changed 4 weeks ago, Mobil1 0W40 and factory filter
- air filter replaced with stock part 3 weeks ago
- nothing but Chevron 91 since I bought the car (best we can get in CA)
Day:
- pretty warm day, probably in the low 80s
- normal bay area humidity, whatever that is. 40%. Not high, anyway.
Dyno:
- Mustang 500-AWD, but we did RWD pulls (no front drive shaft)
- car cooled off for about an hour before the pulls
- squirrel cage fans blowing on the intercooler outlets
- big fan blowing on the coolant radiators
Results:

I'm pretty colorblind, but I think the torque curves are blue, hp is red, and AFR is black.
To my untrained eye, the torque curve looks like it was headed for glory, but it got nipped in the bud. Knock? Boost leak? Shot plugs?
I have silicone hoses waiting to be installed, and a pair of UMW stage 2 ZC turbos on the way. I'll have ECU scanning software ready for the post-mods dyno day.
BTW, I copied this from my other thread because I couldn't change the title of that one.

Dynos in my book are only for tuning or modding something. All dynos are different so the hp difference is most important when comparing the same car on same dyno or mods.
Just go to the 1/4 mile track and see the trap speed. That is my dyno, not to mention cheaper and more accurate on how fast your car is.
BTW, my old 03 evo with ecu and exhaust pulled 312 hp on a dynojet and able to run 12.7@107.7's in the quarter mile so perhaps your number may be pretty good?

Mustang dynos generally output lower numbers when you do a 2wd run (compared to dynojet or dynopack). Both drums are linked so you're stuck using power to turn the second drum as well.
I noticed you're in norcal. Who's mustang dyno was it? Gruppe-S by any chance?

Oh okay. Did Sean mention why it seemed a bit low? I'm not sure about his mustang dyno, but I know the ones I've been on seem to eat up 4-5% more of your power than the dynojets I use.
An example off the top of my head...
My 05 350Z with some mods put down 225rwhp on a mustang awd dyno.
The next day it consistently put down 265rwhp figures on the dynojet.
The 265rwhp was pretty consistent with what others on the Z forums were netting with similar mods on the Dynojet...

Just a quick note, your a/f is MUCH richer in the mid range then most other stock 996's I've dynoed. Somthing may be up that could be causing lower numbers then you expected.
