Gearshift Selector Cable failure

I had a problem with my gear selector recently. The shifter would not engage any of the top H gears (Rev, 1st, 3rd or 6th).

After driving home using only 2nd and 4th I found the selector cable (the green sheathed one on the right) would not push towards the engine.
New cable now fitted and all good! (releif it was not a gear box!!)

My car has done 55,000kms - was wondering if anyone else has had this problem or heard of it happening.

Yes,
it's about a 2 hour job for a rookie mechanic.
(car on jacks)
Remove centre concole, disconnect both ends of the cables and push the cables down into the floor. (2 people makes life easy)
The hardest part about the job is leading the cables up through the hole and then pushing the cables up through the hole (tape them up to make a point with electrical tape helped). Getting the rubber grommet back in place takes some patience. (a little silicon spray helped)
No adjustments needed.

I give it a difficulty rating of 4.
cheers
