2001 vs 2004 Clutch Differences???

Hey Guys,

I test drove the Turbo Coupe I was looking to buy yesterday and everything was awesome except for the clutch engaging VERY VERY high (and doing nothing until then).

After searching this site, I noticed that it's a common complaint amongst owners, but 2004 Turbo's don't seem to have the same problem as the previous models!!!

Does anyone know what differences there are between the 2001 Clutch and 2004 Clutch? I'm thinking if the differences are small, I would maybe modify my existing clutch with 2004 clutch mechanical's.

I was also wondering if there was something like this sold for P-Cars. I got one for my BMW M3 and it's been a really nice (and cheap) mod for the clutch.

Clutch Stop Adjustment

Your input is appreciated!

- KJ

I do not know the specifics but, my test drive was in an 02 and I did not like the high engagement point. When I got my 04 I was pleasantly suprised, the clutch engaged nice and low.

I am so glad that they fixed the clutch engagement point. Can't wait for my '04.

In every car the clutch engagement, placement of pedal engagement is always different from car to car you will never find the exact clutch the same in every car.

After finding out the clutch on the car I test drove needs to be replaced, I guess that explains why the clutch engagement was so high.

However, after talking to the service advisor, I brought up the topic about how the 2004 clutches seem to engage fine, whereas the older 2001-2003's seemed to have a much higher engagement. He said to me that the Part Numbers were the same so they are the same part. Which leads me to believe that either:

A - The 2004's feel better because they are BRAND new clutches and all the 2001-2003's feel worse because they have been used/abused.

OR

B - Something other than the transmission itself has been changed that leads to the better clutch feel in the 2004's (perhaps the pedal assembly, linkage was changed?).

Do you guys have any thoughts?

Thanks,
KJ

My clutch was replaced in Jan. 04 and it became way more sensitive and controllable than the old one ever was. So yea... seems like they did some magic to the 04 clutch.

Hello. I've been thinking of having my dealer look at my clutch to see if the engagement point could be changed. My car shift fine, but it is definitely a bit high to engage. Was your clutch truly defective or did you simply find the clutch engagement difficult? Do you think a dealer would go to the trouble of fixing this even though the clutch works OK?

Sincerely,
Paul

I did notice when i test drove a 2001 turbo that the clutch engaged a little high, but on my 03 which now has about 1800 miles its prefect. I think it just depends on the lifespan of the clutch
