Help with Turbo Coupe Purchase

Hey Guys,

I got the Porsche Pre-Purchase Inpsection Report back and everything is in tip top shape EXCEPT the clutch.

I had said that it engaged VERY high in a previous post (MUCH higher than normal) and it would seem that a car with less than 7,000 miles on it shouldn't need a new clutch. It would seem to be that the car probably endured some crazy clutch drops and some "ragging" at the hands of the previous owners.

How much does it cost to replace the clutch, and what do you guys think I should do? The car is in tip-top shape otherwise. It has 2 small stone chips, that's IT. No other flaws. The price is also incredible. Is excessive clutch wear covered under warranty?

I'm also thinking of getting an aftermarket clutch instead. But if the leasing company agrees to pay for part of this repair, I'll probably go with OEM parts. What do you guys think? The service advisor suggested I may want to go with the GT2 clutch. What are the advantages/disadvantages of going with the GT2 clutch?

Thanks,
KJ

Mine was just replaced under the warranty because of a shifting problem. I was told it is a $2800 job

The GT2 clutch disc is solid hub, the turbo disk has 4 heavy springs to absorb drivetrain shocks. The pressure plate has the same part # for TT and X50, according to the PET CD. It's possible that the GT2 clutch has a different friction material. I've looked at a stock turbo clutch disk and it seems very strong and well made.

It is very unlikely that it will be replaced under warranty.

According to the warranty manual, clutch replacement is only performed with a defect in the material, workmanship. Wear and tear, abuse, etc, is not covered. Try to get the seller/ dealer to do the replacement for the same selling price or at least meet halfway on the cost of replacement. The Turbo's clutch engagement is higher than other cars I've driven. Perhaps it's really a normal clutch? Any slippage? Any trouble getting into, and out of gears? Any noise? Any chatter when leaving from a dead stop? If you can answer no to most if not all of these questions, then maybe it's ok! Keep us informed, and good luck.

I didn't detect any slippage, but I only drove the car for 15 minutes.

No trouble getting in/out of gear, no noise, no chatter.

But when I mean the engagement is HIGH, I really mean it. There's 4"+ of travel before the clutch even starts to bite. It's crazy. I thought my M3 was bad when it had 1.5"-2" of free travel.

I'll keep you guys informed. Because the selling price was "rock bottom" as it was, it could be kinda tough to get any more.

That is way different than mine! If the cluch is going you will probably see the tach moving in the higher gears from slipping. They take a little while to get used to but shift great if there are no problems.

So if you had to replace the clutch, which one would you go for? The GT2 clutch? Or the regular Turbo clutch?

Thanks,
KJ

I don't know. Maybe ask on the GT3/GT2 forum. Probably either one would be OK.
