Joe West is infamous around these parts
I run a board at www.virtualjeepclub.com and I can tell you that running a local server is a great deal of work but the speed benefits are amazing.
I am using a dual processor (2Ghz) Apple G5 with 6Gb of memory and my board absolutely flies.
Quick searches... fast updates.

There are a few potential problem areas though... when my cable connection goes down; the board goes down until the cable company can come out and fix it (although because it is a business account, they come out quickly). A good UPS is necessary for all equipment running the board.

Finally... you need to set your servers up properly. It took me MANY hours to get everything configured properly.

Good luck with the transition.

Joe West
