Performance of a 996 stock?
Performance of a 996 stock?
What kind of performance does a stock 996 offer and what (if any) kind of mods could I do to make it keep up with a 997? I really haven't been able to find 1/4 mile figures as well as 0-60 times.. I honestly haven't really looked that hard but I figured that you guys could tell me off of the top of your heads...
Thanks in advance..

Not real impressive? Dude, you are spoiled!

996 is THE gentleman's roadster, especially since Jag wimped out. I went from a Boxster S to a 911, and the performance still makes me grin. Yes, the Box was faster in the curves, but that is because of my skill deficite. The 996 pulls at just about any speed. Until I can afford the Turbo Cabriolet, this will be my fun car.
YMMV, of course.
Ive read mags that say 1/4 mile at 13.3. I suck at the dragstrip and I did a 13.6 with fabspeed bypass pipes and fabspeed airbox upgrade. My rear tires werent in very good shape also. 0-60 is about 5 seconds. To keep up with a regular 997 Carrera you would have to do ECU, Intake, Exhaust and throttle body. Number wise you should be there.

Mostly every race I have ever seen with cars that are relatively close in power and weight usually comes down to driver skill and error. Obviously if you have a tiptronic or auto the skill is not as much as with a manual, but none the less if you dont practice your launches and or aggressive take off's then you will never get the hang of it.
I hardly ever launch hard or take off from the line to be honest, so, probably a 996 or a slower car could pull me unless the cars performance has an outstanding increase between 2-3 shift-and I make a clean 1-2 shift.
I have been really timid to race anything since I got my 997, but I am curious to see what the kill ratio would be against other alike vehicles.
The 996 in my opinion holds the presipice in its class for many reasons and the 997 continues with that pedigree. I would not compare them simply stock to stock, but with a few mods, some practice=you will be all over them like white on rice.

The 997(325hp) and 996(320hp) have pretty much the same stock performance numbers. Porsche switched from quoting 0-62 on the 996 to 0-60 on the 997 for the marketing materials. The 5hp difference is within the tollerances of the engines real dynos).
The 997S (350hp) is a little faster than a 996 X51 (345hp). The 997S x51 is faster than all stock iterations of the 996 (other than GT3/turbo)
BTW: The biggest difference in performance is PASM vs stock 996 suspension. If your 996 has the sport option, it would be close to PASM (though would not drive as comfy on bumpy roads) also the 997 with sportschrono has a much better throttle response, but if you "chip" the car or put the plenum on it would be closer. Also the 997 has a shorter shifter stock, but you can put the 997 oem short shifter in a 996 and it's identical to the 997.

I have. It was a piece of cake. I've raced both 997 and 997S. I didn't really find the S all that much faster.
For a reference, I've raced a 997 when my 996 was stock. It was extremely close with about half a car length win to the 997, which could probably be accounted for by the fact that my car is several hundred pounds heavier being a cab.
post pics of the ride... I dont think you showed us yet... my 3.4 and the 997s was at the track.
