I was able to see the ebay car in person and saw their version of the carfax. I have a couple of questions, one, the ebay car, the one I like the best, came to MN from a NJ dealer and was only here since July and the owner is flipping it already (it has been on the market for 3 months, they just dropped the price) - I am wondering if there is something dubious with this car and how I could find out. The passanger side air bag compartment is protruding about 1/8th inch and I can't help but wonder if it has been deployed in spite of a very clean carfax. How can you really know? Will the local dealer give you an honest assesment of the car if you are not buying it from him? On another subject...there are a lot of companies that sell extended warranties...who would, can you buy them from? I have owned a couple of Porshce's in the past, but always bought them new from the dealer...this is my first venture into the used car market and don't want to make a 50k mistake. Tcarho
I have an 04 C4S mint condition - sport exhaust, heated seats, Bose,CD, Radar/laser hidden system, LoJack, original wheels/tires (currently have 19" new Michelin w/Kahn rims - will sell w/or without car). My car was the cover car for the PCA magazine a few months ago in the NW. White w/full black leather interior and some carbon fiber. PM me if you are interested - I have not put it on the market yet, but will be soon (I have an order in for a new 08 997TT ). Car is garaged/covered - all maintenance records, no accidents. Car is under Porsche CPO warranty (6 yr or 100k).

If you want to validate the CARFAX info as far as possible body repairs, when you take it for a PPI, use a resource tha thas a paint thickness gauge. Most Indie's have this as it wil check all metal panels for paint thickness and can point very easily to possible body repair work being done.

I did this on my 02 C4S purchase and it was reassuring to validate the body had no repair work done as a part of the PPI.

Good luck with your search and be patient as there are some real good deals out these at this time of year ( including some on this forum as you can see).

Can a private seller/buyer get a car "certified pre-owned" by Porsche or is that something that dealers do with the cars they are sellling?
Thanks,

When I bought my C4S I did the same research. IF you purchase the car from a dealer he is required to tell you if the the body panels have been replaced or bondo'd. Its a law in many states. It must be disclosed.

I would HIGHLY recommend purchasing a full warranty!!!!!!!! 3-5K is NOTHING compared to a 12-18K Engine replacement!!!

And most aftermarket warranties are transferable to another owner.

The dealer is the only one authorized to offer a CPO warranty and I understand it is not transferrable to a future buyer of the car even if it has outstanding time ( or milage) left on the CPO.

Is that true? If so... why do so many private sellers advertise the CPO as part of the sale then?

CPO is tranferrable from private seller to private buyer. CPO does not transfer from private seller to dealer.

jb, Sorry for the confusion, I bought my car with aftermarket warranty and got it transferred frmo previous owner as it was private sale. Previous post c;arified the CPO isssue as not transferrable back to the dealer ( and then passed along t obuyer). I don't know if the dealer then could "re-ceretifiy" the car for another CPO??

who did you buy the warranty from? Sorry, I see from the dealer, but who was the aftermarket company?
Thanks,

Fine used car dealership can often warrant the car themselves. When I purchased my car back in June 07, we negotiated a couple of month’s warranty. I know it is a very short term warranty in comparison to most of what most folks are used to. The point is it is negotiable with the dealer. Within the 60 days, I discovered a slight oil leak which was diagnosed to be from the breather hose, coolant leak which they replaced with a new tank, replaced the trunk micro switch. They replaced the brake rotors and pads after the PPI. Even after the warranty period, they looked after the stabilizer bar link replacement. The car has since been running beautifully.

I was told by the local Porsche dealership that it is common for Porsche to burn oil... a 1/4 quart of oil every 1000 miles or so. So far, I've accumulated about 3000 miles and so far so good .. no topping required.

burning oil and not burning oil simply represents a minor inconvenience of having to check your oil and refill it intermittently and has zero bearing on reliablity/performance as described by porsche (not unusual to have to top off).

it's one thing to top off a quart's worth every 10K miles... it's a whole other story to top off every week.
