Can independent auto shops do it?

Assuming you don't need a new engine, it's about an $800 fix at the dealer. I'm not sure that the independent shops have the necessary tool to measure the crankcase for roundness. I would push Porsche customer service to repair the car under "extended warranty" as this is a known problem that is inherent in the 996 engine.
