Newb here

Hey everyone,

I have lurked the forums for a while, and decided to finally join. 911's are the reason I first developed a love for cars, and like most people here I've dreamed of owning since I was a little kid. I recently finished my MBA and have a job now that will actually allow me to afford one in the upcoming year, and I have my eyes on the 996 as an entry into the 911 world.

I have pretty extensive driving experience, and own an RX-7 now (with a few other toys). Ideally, I am looking for a 911 that I can lightly modify, and still use as a daily driver if I want to. I've read that the 99-01 would be the ideal candidate for this.

Now, on to the question. The main issue I have seen with these vehicles is RMS failure. Is there any other notorious problem with this series? How much can I expect to pay for yearly maintenance? I have a Range Rover as a DD right now, so naturally I am not terrible concerned about reliability. I would like to have some sort of ballpark figure that I can work into my budget however.

Thanks for any help.

Fellow Atlantian, I bought my 99 C2 a year ago from my father. It had 22k miles on it and he just had to have a 2007 CS convertable brand new
I double checked maint/Porsche dealer - it never did receive a new RMS, but (knock on wood) has not ever had a oil leak - now with 27k miles -
It did however need new
alternator - he replaced
battery - he replaced
Tires - he replaced
water pump - I replaced
wheel bearing - I replaced
MAF sensor - I replaced
I have added some goodies to make it more Porsche like (sorry my humble opinion).... see signature
This car is not cheap to maintain period, I never expected it to be. Be prepared for the unknown. This is what cost....
My advice - find a 99/00 car that either is low mileage or possibly has some warranty left -(porsche discontinued on my 99)and pray a lot for no issues!
or buy an newer model year with factory warranty and low miles
I will say that like yourself this was my interum dream car until I can afford a TT. I absolutely luv my C2....it is now my daily driver.

hello!

we also have a 99 c2. just now replaced the clutch at 40K. no other issues. "she's" run like a dream! We've autoX'd and done some fun, spririted drives with our local 6speed group. we bought it in May with 33K with no warranty left, so crossing our fingers that nothing major will come up.

next one will be the 996 S! but for now, our 996 is our baby! a friend one the week after we did because he loved ours so much. he's had an issue with a leak around the seal of the headlight. other than that, nothing!

best of luck!
