I agree.....rather juvenile...post a picture so your adversary can see what he's up against? My dad can beat up your dad and here's what he looks like? C'mon....this is supposed to be an adult forum.

Post a "wanted to use ad" for a durametric here or renntech.org. I bet someone in your area has one and willing to let you use it. I bet it's the MAF... I already had one go bad. Good Luck.

I keep a cheapo OBDII scanner in the trunk of mine so that I can read them and make a determination of how important they are. Well worth $100.

I also bought the Enginuity Pocket PC scanner tool, which is very impressive and give stats on just about everything. Amazing bit of gear.

I just got rid of a random misfire (P0300) with a little detective work and a scanner.

I would have been nice if Porsche integrated a code reader into the car itself. My Ferrari for example has a mechanism whereby you can read the codes out by having the ECU flash one of the engine lights on the dash. Nice feature.

Anyway, I'd say in general that you should always investigate the light and at least know what it is before taking off for a journey.

Merry Christmas chaps !

No worries as of yet. I am in Baltimore now and no CEL. But why was might heart in my stomach the whole trip thinking, "oh CEL " please don't come on. For all the fear or dismissal regarding CEL's, has anyone had anything bad happen as a result of the CEL being on? I've never heard a single story of engine damage. I know a blinking CEL denotes a serious CAT problem, but the standard CEL stayin on? Hopefully I'm done with the light being on, but i was just curious.

Pretty much the only thing that will happen is the car might go into limp mode...to protect itself if anything serious is afoot.

I have a check engine light on right now. I read the code and it's the fan that helps with emissions at start up.

I will fix it soon but it's not pressing

so its normal for my fan to be on each time i start my car (even in the morning after the car has been sitting all night) for about two minutes and then it goes off and the idle drop from 1000 rpm to just below?

Yes. The fan removes fumes/vapor at start up for a couple minutes.

PepBoys has the OBDII scanner for $49.99 You can read the code right when it comes on and eliminate any worries. If it was a random trip of the light, like an issue I had with my muffler bypass, then you can just erase the code on the spot. Well worth the investment.
