Questions about a 996
Hi,
I'm looking at a 1999, 996. It has 56,558 miles on it. It has an original warranty date of 06/09/1998. When did the 996 actually go into production?
Is there anything to look for w/the early model 996's, other than the rear seal?
Looking at the 911 Porsche prices, from the 993's to the 997's, the 1999 996's seem to show a drop in prices for that particular year. Is there anything wrong w/the 1999's, other than being a totally new design w/a water cooled engine?
What is considered the best naturaly aspirated (N/A) 996 model years?
Thx.

Do a search.....lots of info on this. In Europe, they had the 996 for sale in 1998 IIRC. There are a few things to look for, and generally, 99s were considered to be less reliable than other years, lots of opinions and information....again, do a search.
As far as the best years, the general opinion is that 02-04 are more reliable as they incorporated a number of improvements over the MKI...but again, do a search as this is another lengthy discussion.

I went and studied the vehicle more, but while it looks OK visually, studying its history, it's had too many owners (5). It's first owner had a lease, and there is no maintenance history, so I decided to hold off for the time being. I'll keep my eyes open for a an '02+.
I also preferred to get one that is Porsche Certified, and/or at least one that is a one owner, that has a known good maintenance history w/the local dealer.
I like the Cayman S's also.

What about the fact that it is red? I've heard stories that red vehicles tend to get more speeding tickets than others. Any truth to that?

No, but red cars are a subliminal flag to cops. Easy to spot, and red is a popular colour for sports cars. I've had a local cop tell me that he's got a tendency to hit red cars with the gun more often.

More predominant, maybe...
Hello,
Do your research and be patient, try rennlist.com as well. Most P-car owners will admit that they browsed for a year or two before making their final decision. I began my search with the '99 model in mind as well and ended up with an '05 GT3. Feel free to PM me with questions.
Good luck!
