Pre-03 cars had a much better placement of the digital speedo?

I really like it in the center of the cluster rather than in the left window. Is there any way I can switch the function of these windows?

Dont think its possible.
That is what I thought too. Really didn't think it was such a wise decision to move the digi speedo to the left and make it smaller. Not to mention that it is often obscured by the steering wheel spokes. Yet, the prime real estate space of the center display was being given to the secondary displays such as ambient temp and such. I often take a GPS unit along for a ride just so I have the speed reading in my line of sight
The cluster in the picture is what I call the old style. The old style had the speedometer display under the tachometer. On the new style the speedometer display was moved to under the analog speedometer.
The new style started on the Boxster and turbo in 2001, and on the 996 in 2002.
I have been Boxstering since 1999. I remember when 2001 Boxster owners were pissed when the display got moved. But Porsche needed the larger middle display to show more information, such as the OBC functions.
Then Porsche fixed it when the 997/987 came out.
