ah, turns out it's state specific. about 1/2 the states include property with bodily injury in uninsured:

That amount of damage to a regular 996 could easily cost $10K - $20K to fix. I wouldn't put it past Porsche to charge 10times more for repairs to a Carrera GT. (shipped back to Germany)

So sad...
