bounce off rev-limiter = engine shut off?

Hello all,

I had a quick question. I was driving in a rather spirited fashion, leaving one of my favorite turns near where I live, and I guess I wasn't quite paying attention to my rpm's. Next thing I know, I bounced off the rev-limiter, and a couple seconds later, the car shut off.... All the idiot lights came on and it just went dead. It started right back up while it was rolling when I turned the key, but I was wondering if this was normal or not.

Has anyone else experienced this?

Thanks in advance,
John

Not normal for the car to shut off, but the idiot lights you saw are just what happens when the car is off and your key is in the on position...so this is normal. How do you know you bounced off the limiter? My guess is you stalled it.

nope, I'm almost 100% positive that I didn't stall it. Like I said, hit the limiter and then she just kinda went dead. I didn't touch the key until I saw the lights. Kinda creepy, but it stared right back up.... this hasn't happened to anyone else?.... crud..

bounce off it again... if it shut down again, I would have it looked at. If it doesnt do it again... I wouldnt worry about it.

Could be a fluke but the ignition switch has been known to go out on these cars. The symptoms sound like the beginning's of a faulty switch... the over-rev might just have been a coincidence at the time. If it happens again you might want to look at the switch.

some folks have had occasional issues when they do a WOT run to redline followed immediately by a shift to neutral to let it coast back down to legal speeds and have the car stall on them. ??

You will feel that the power is reduced /cut-off as you hit the redline, but the car should not stall on you.

After awhile the ignition switch gets worn and people have issues with it... cant get the key out or not working at all...etc
