Bye Bye Porsche

I bought a 03 911 Coupe off lease in May of 2007 and to date I have spent 7K on this money pit. And now the new problem has been the shifter popping out of/not going into 4th gear. Research on many forums and calls with many repair shops have yielded either a gearbox fault or worn synchronizer b/t 3rd and 4th. Cost to repair 7-10K. I am done. I traded that puppy in on a 05 BMW 05 Z4 still under BMW dealer warranty for 2 more years. On one of my first visits to a porsche shop for repair i was speaking with this guy who had a brand new 07 GT3. He told me, "These cars are great. But I only buy them new, and once the warranty is over i dump them. I learned my lesson with a 911 i had, spending my money trying to fix them when they go wrong is a fortune..." This is my third porsche and will be last until i can buy one brand new under warranty.

If you buy a new one with a warranty, as soon as you drive it out the door it is worth $10,000 less than you paid, and over the life of the warranty it will prbably go down $10,000+ a year, that pays for alot of repairs. The other day someone here was trying to sell a C2 coupe, I think it was an 06, with less than 3,000 mile (so still under warranty) list of about $105,000 and he would take $75,000. that $30,000 (although he probably did not pay full list) will pay for alot of repairs.

The bottom line is, if you want to play you gotta pay. Try a used with a CPO warranty, save of the depreciation over a new car, and get a warranty.

By the way, a Z4 in no way compares to a 996/997. Personally I would rather have a boxster than a Z4

Sorry about your luck, but these are cars and **** breaks. I hate to hear things like this, but these are very very reliable cars, did you do have a PPI done? Did you check the service records? My 04 C2 had 70,000 K on it when I sold mine, it had a few problems but they way I drove the car there should have been more. I talk to the current owner all the time, he has over 110,000 k on it and not a single issue, and its tracked regularly.Good Luck with your new Z4....Porsche There is no substitute...

used CPO or off-lease + purchased warranty is the way to go.
Really sorry to hear about your extremely bad experience, I'm sure it was not fun.
I don't think any of us buy pcars with 'budget' and 'low maintenance' in mind, a few things here and there are to be expected.. but after spending that much $ in repairs after such a short time...and more to come.. I'd be pissed too.

Not meaning to knock the Z4 but it aint no pcar - you'll get bored with it soon. Call me psychic...

My wife has an '07 Z4...she likes it but I think it is a very boring car to drive...horrible leg and head room...not much power...ok handling....too bad you had such bad luck with the 911....

I have bought 2 911's both off warranty...had no problems out of either...Sounds to me when you bought the 911 you got a lemon....it happens...

It's bad luck for you. Sorry to hear the pain you'd been through. Here is an example with good luck, I bought mine in Oct. 06 with no warranty. As soon I took delivery of the car I drove it to a local indie near my home. I told the owner I want full service done to the car along with clutch replacement. Cost me $1400 for parts & labor. Then I took it to an alignment shop for alignment and corner balance $250. Since then I only paid one oil/filter service $92. So the total of owning mine to date is $1742 for services.

The car run really strong. No issue. I did took the car up on high speed a few times at 150+mph. So here the point, some owners may get a bad cars and others with good cars. It is hard to know which car is in good order.

My mod. for the Porsche is much less than what I did to my Bimmer. I bought my Bimmer two months before I bought the Porsche. It's nice to have warranty on the Bimmer until now. But the bill for the mod. was over 13K.

Sorry about your troubles, but these cars do have some typical issues like others, coolant tank crack or bad cap, water pump, ignition switch, and small things here and there but I think any cars would have their own issues, like my previous Bimmer too. Luckily I had my X-warranty to cover all the above items. Like most people said here, a good X-warranty is a safer bet with these cars but some people would take their chances. I really love mine and will not part with it even if the engine blows. Good luck with the Z4. Cheers,

it sucks that you had a bad experience. i bought a MY03 C4S despite bad marks for that MY in consumer reports. would have preferred a MY04, but i wanted one too badly to wait; it's a crap shoot. my car has the squeaks and rattles pointed out in CR, but is otherwise mechanically and electrically sound. and, i got a CPO. so, porsche will pay for problems that might come up until 2010. then i may be in your shoes.

Sounds like some bad luck dude. i hope the Z4 works out well for you but i suspect you're going to miss the 911.

When i bought my 02 specifically looked for one with a good extended warranty, and it was a good idea as i've had the RMS and a leaky gasket replaced.

My gear pop out issue apparently has been a major problem for a lot of turbo owners.
I will miss my 911, and yeah the Z4 doesn't compare, but i live in manhattan so i rarely opened it up anyway. the car i really like is my girlfriend's mini cooper s.
