Just listened to the video.....go to Eurosport for that one. I was in Gary's office today when you celled. I wish you lots of luck but I don't think that is a lifter by any means.

GL, hope everything works out to be not too painful.

There is a bright side, you can always build a 3.8 stroker

Sounds very much like rod knock, hope you find a good motor.

I'd be surprised if it's a rod because these cars RARELY throw them and this happened in 6 gear at 3k rpm or so

Or maybe that's me just hoping for the best

Top three theories are:
1) Compressed Lifter
2) Valve
3) Rod

Maybe I should start a poll and we can see who is correct on Thursday

Tell your wrench to inspect the flywheel as well.
Only time I ever heard something sound that bad ended up being a barly noticable crack in the flywheel, was just barly cracked but was still hitting the teeth on the starter were the crack was.
It also quieted down in the upper RPM's as you described.

will do! it's in the air - muffler and oil pan off. They didn't mention if there was metal in the oil or not but I assume I would have got that call when they got the pan off if it was full of shavings

That is the sad thing about Renntech. Great board but such little traffic that questions are often not answered unless Loren/Toolpants do it themselves.

Nice name by the way, topher was my nickname when I was young.

I talked to him on Thursday and they found it was a stuck exhaust lifter. Engine is going to have top end done and should be good to go. He is also looking at clutch since mileage might require replacement.

yep, it was a lifter so while they are in there they are rebuilding the top end, replacing belts, plugs etc etc. Clutch was good to go but after spending the money on this stuff I'm going to do a bumper conversion to have a little "fun"

Looks like this was premature...with the engine back in it it's still making the same noise

That blows!
Tell them to yank the starter and push start it before they yank out the engine again.
