Unhappy My wind screen took a rock today.

Oh man. While traveling back from the Portland American LeMans series, I let my buddy drive my new C4S (1400miles) and he took a rock from a truck and cracked the wind screen.

I know, I know... it could have happened to me but honestly, it hurts a little worse knowing someone else was driving my car when it took a hit. Unavoidable or not.

Just venting here. I did not say a word to my buddy. Some things are worth a lot more than a wind screen.

Since I foolishly waived wind screen insurance on my policy, this one is on my tab. Think I'll make an adjustment in my policy for next time.

Anybody know how much it will cost me to replace a wind screen on a 911? Please tell me (lie if necessarry) that a new one will look good as new.

A question for you more experienced owners, is this now a legitimate excuse to never let someone drive my car again?

Rock hit the windscreen? Didn't realize that was possible! I'd be happy that the rock didn't hit yourself or your buddy! Yikes that could have been ugly, real ugly!

yes, sorry. That what we called them in Navy Air. I guess I tend to reminice my Porsche as my former cockpit.

Insurance must replace a cracked windshield by law... with no expense to you if I recall correctly. Eric (CAPTLST) would know about this.

Trust me, I will check.

But...pretty sure my insurance reqiuires a separate rider. I also carry a $1000 deductible. It is usually a lot cheaper to self-insure the first $1000.

Like I said, I'll be adding my windshield rider for future protection. Just wondering if somone else has had to replace the windsheild and how much it cost and if they did a good job.

Britt,
You are correct, however that is only in certin states (FL being one of them!!)
As for a new windshield, when I had one replaced in my M5 it was covered by insurance, but I saw the bill and it was $500 for the window and $500 in labor!!!!! Not sure what it is for the 996 tho...
Good Luck
Evan

One bit of advice. Insist upon OEM glass and nothing less. It will be expensive...but worth it. I haven't had to replace my 996 wind shield yet, but I'm due (I took a rock as well a few months back), but I had done so in my previous Pcar (Box) and it was $800. The windshield in the 996 will be more I presume.

Not as bad as I thought

Took a rock in the windshield driving back from Paris to Stuttgart, got it replaced at the Porsche factory. Good as new, can't even tell it happened!

Go over to Rennlist.com and do a search about this. There was a long discussion about windshield replacements a few months ago. I lot of people felt that the some of the aftermarket windshields were equal to OEM quality. In addition, many felt that the OEM glass was very soft and had a tendency to pit more that PPG or Safelite glass.

rock in windshield

I had the exact same experience a few weeks ago. My brand new "04 C4S Cab with about 300 miles on it had a close encounter with a rock falling off a truck as I passed. It cost $96o.00 installed using OEM glass. The repair took only a few hours, and the car is absolutely perfect. There is no way to tell that it was replaced. I didn't file a claim, as my deductible is $1000.

Had a similar thing happen to my C4S with only 900 miles on the clock. I was able to have mine repaired. It started to crack but because it was smaller than a quarter and not in the drivers field of view (near the top in the tinted area) it was repairable. $65 and guaranteed not to spread. You can still see it but cheaper than a new windshield.

I too had it happen at about 600 miles. Mine was also small (about the size of a quarter) so I tried the chip repair option. It can still be seen but only slightly and I now have 5800 miles. I figured I would just wait a while to change it out and it is still doing fine.
