02 996 v. e46 m3 as a daily driver, only vehicle?
I had an '04 M3, then I traded it in for an '02 996 C4S. I love the Porsche and use it for my daily commute. But we use my wife's Subaru for shopping trips, and most errands where we need the extra space. If you could only have one car, and trunk space and a back seat are an issue, get the M3.
Trunk space and back seat are not an issue whatsoever. I'm single, no kids, and I hate golf. The only things I keep in my trunk are a basketball, basketball shoes, a spare tire and microfiber towels/window cleaner/detailing spray, lol.
Then it sounds like your sig says it all. Good luck with the search, that is half the fun.
What are some other sites that have 996 info? ( don't know forum rules so sorry if asking that isn't allowed, just looking for all the info I can get).
If you get a C4S or the turbo, then a basketball, shoes, tire, towels and detail spray will barely fit. You might be able to squeeze in an iPod if you're lucky

I've driven an m3, not a 996. My boss had one for a few years and loved it but, yes I'll have to drive it before I decide what's what. I'm just in the initial stages of indecision and gathering as much info as I can.
I really dislike the 135's looks. No way I would drive that thing. Looks like a rich high schooler's car. Like an upscale Neon srt or something. I do like the 335i coupe. It's a good looking, great performance/potential.I would like to go N/A engine though. And honestly, if I'm spending 35k or whatever (which is not a small sum for me) , I would like to get something "special", even if it's used.
Why bitterness?
Why bitterness?
I've driven the 335i quite abit. No comparison between the 2, IMHO. The turbo/throttle lag on the 335i is horrid. It feels bloated compared to a 996. 996 feels a LOT like the MZ4 coupe, also a nice car to consider. You don't see them on every corner.
I owned a M3 and loved the car for what it was, a great sports sedan. I have nothing bad to say about the car. It is well crafted and probably a better value. It is also a bit more practical. I was considering the new M3 convertable prior to buying my 996. I am glad I bought the 996 instead. Forget about the specs, there is just somthing special about a 911. I have never once regretted not buying the BMW but when I had my M3 I was always looking at 911's and wishing I was driving one instead.
I use my 996 as a daily driver...
Its real nice to drive in traffic/around town compared to previous sporty cars I owned. Of course its even better on the open road!
There's plenty of room for shopping, the trunk is pretty deep and you can always put stuff on the fold down rear seats. I got the hatch back version
(targa) so its nice and practical...
and that's pretty much what I told the wifey for her buy in.

as for the z4 m version.. there's a reason why you don't see them around.. cuz no one wants them. pls believe.
you probably can't go wrong with either. i recently went through the same decision.
i was looking for another cheap DD. and i came close to buying an M3.
but after putting 50k miles on a 996(tt) in just about 20 months, i couldnt think of anything else i wanted to drive everyday. and ended up buying another 996.
i think the 996 is a great buy, since they dont seem to be favored compared to their round-lighted predessors and successors. their poor resale value means they are a bargain for what you get.

I agree, I really don't care much about resale value when I buy a car. I usually keep it for 3-5 years so obviously it will depreciate. I don't consider my car an investment. If anything because of the mods I buy, my cars usually turn into a money pit.
