Gauge cluster questions.....Needles dead

I swapped out my face gauges this weekend. It was an easy job.

Remove cluster from dash - 2 screws 4 connectors
Remove gauges from surround - 2 screws
Seperate cluster - 2 screws 2 tabs 2 clips
Lift needles with a fork (old BMW cluster trick)
Pop the center O ring and lift off the face
Replace with new face and reassemble.

The only things that are not working are the far left 2 needles (Voltage and Speedo). Digital speedo works and the cruise light etc. It is just the needles that do not work.

I double checked to make sure they were not put back on to firm. I did the work on a static safe bench. The fuses look to be fine.

Anyone have any suggestions?

I just got my red gauge faces in today. Was about to install my self, but now the $125 install fee sounds like a good idea.

I have no experience with this, but I'd check the connectors again to make sure they're all the way on.

Tim,
Sorry to hijack your thread, but I was thinking about the same gauge face covers. How did you remove the gauge cluster out of the dash?

2 screws, one behind the hazard switch and the other behind the mesh cover to the left of the dash.

Tim,

From my own experience, make sure that the plugs in the back are all connected securely, I made the mistake thinking they were all plugged and came to realize that one was not, which caused half of the cluster not to work. Just my .2 cents worth...

arent those needles (from behind) spring loaded?

meaning you take them off and they go back to 0, You need to make sure that springs don't turn, your case is too late, unless these cars don't use springs behind the gauges....

Didn't find any springs. Removed and re-set everything. I had it all apart (which was actually kinda fun)

It goes in tomorrow to get looked at.

Our local group has done this on 2 Boxsters, What, if anything was your reference point when you reinstalled the needles on the shaft.

I lifted straight off with no twist. Thus my re-install should have been nuts on. BUT the two gauges in question do have a full down and full up lock position (limited range of motion). all other gauge needles work like they should. There is no movment at all fromthe left 2 dials. Nothing at all.

The little gear in the motor had come of its pilar supports. Just opened them up and put it back and it worked

Nice sence of accomplishment
