To each their own in the evaluation of what is worth spending $$ towards warranties including the extensions of same
I know these cars have issues and that does suck. BUT I do not and will not believe these cars have a high risk of a catastrophic failure, no even close.
I drive with piece of mind without a warranty. If a big failure (not cooling tank, RMS and the like) would strike me I do have the ability to take care of it and still enjoy the luxuries life has brought me.
It's very simple, not worth spending 3K or so for a few years just in the remote chance with all the odds in the favor of the warranty companies.
Wasting money fueled by paranoia is what makes no sense.
If it was real I'd have sold my 996 long ago and bought real piece of mind via another make of car such as an M3.
People die in car wrecks every day but most p-car owners go on pleasure drives with no second thoughts.

my statement, what I shared above rings true. $3K for peace of mind for 3-4 years is not a waste of money. that's very cheap for peace of mind. 3-4 years is a lot of your life.
so it is NOT blown out of proportion. m96s, especially the 3.4s are susceptible to unpredictable catastrophic failure and they are to be avoided. that's my recommendation based on my 20 months of m96 ownership and more importantly, engagement with other 996 911 folks on 6speed and rennlist.
i would own a reman m96 out of warranty. i would not own an original 3.4 out of warranty. original 3.6... jury's out. depends very much on the condition, history, paperwork of particular car like any other car out there.
if porsche would've been more forthright about the IMS blow-ups (i.e. like BMW M with their S54 early rod bearing issues), we'd all be better off. what we have left then is the porsche ownership community and you hear the same tired story all too often to simply ignore it

I can speak with experience on this one. I purchased a '99 that was just out of warranty but only 36k miles. I figured it would go 100k no problem. The engine's counterbalance shaft failed and destroyed the motor. 12k from a dealer for a remanufactured engine with updated bearings. I've had no issues for 2 years on the new motor but I'm kinda pissed at Porsche ever since because it's a documented weakness in the engine and they wouldn't help out at all - except taking a check.
I personally couldn't find a company to carry an extended warranty (limits on repairs was 2k or something tiny) on the car so good luck.
Anyways, hope your luck is better than mine.

i bought a warranty for 2300 and havent needed it (knocks on wood). the peace of mind the 2300 gets me makes ALL the difference in how i use the car. the car is meant to be enjoyed without worry. these are expensive cars to repair.
and it must be said, if not for the warranty, i wouldn't have dared buy a big tickt car like this. i stretched to buy this wonderful machine rather than a domestic or japanese substitute.

I have and would again.... So long as you plan on performing all of your schedules maint. and keep up with all your service recommendations then do it... And if it breaks oh well.... the world is not coming to an end....

Does anyone know if the CPO inspection by Porsche detects potential RMS issues (i.e., that the seal is an older version versus the new version, etc.)? I figured if Porsche is going through the trouble of CPO'ing a car and adding 2 year factory warranty to it, they'd move to proactively correct potential RMS failures by changing the seals before reselling the car.

Again... all this is speculations, gut feelings and opinions. No one knows %100 when an engine is gonna blow 3.4, 3.6 reman or not...
The amount of... this efin car rocks, there is no subsitute, track day is the sh*t, this little engine just blew away this and that car, very impressed at the level of performance, such a pleasure to drive threads... that Ive seen here and other forums.... far far outweighs the my engine is blown thread.
Sh*t happens, stop trying to understand the mystery and meaning of life... noone will ever solve it.
Its a toy!.... have fun with it, if its a DD... have fun with your DD toy. If the toy breaks... others will continue to enjoy their toy... the most common experience that we share with our toy is that we enjoy them. That is why we bought these cars...
To answer the OP... there are 2 answers and neither is right or wrong. Peace of mind is just that (state of the mind) get the warranty for peace of mind... if your comfortable drivng your car without one (such as me), that is peace of mind as well.... spend the $$$ now for a warranty or save the $$$ for a rainy day.
This debate will go down in Porsche history with the rest of the other Porsche engine debates... Im glad to be a part of it.

hey red, name one instance where you've heard of a 3.6 reman or even a 3.4 reman failing. i've come across 0.
and i like your attitude, but blowing $15K for an engine replacement is absolutely stupid on a car worth $35-40K. $12K buys you a lot of things like food, water, vacation, clothes... spending it on a replacement engine gets you to where you should've been all along anyways. it gets you to ground zero.
it's a black eye for porsche, but some people gloss over it because they have p-car goggles on. it's absolutely ludicrous how often the ims/coolant stories come up with the 3.4s.
we say the internet car forums is niche yet in this very small place on the www, we read up on countless number of failure stories.
and i like your attitude, but blowing $15K for an engine replacement is absolutely stupid on a car worth $35-40K. $12K buys you a lot of things like food, water, vacation, clothes... spending it on a replacement engine gets you to where you should've been all along anyways. it gets you to ground zero.

Ben... GT3's arent bullet proof... compared to our M96 absolutely it is. Its all relative... Im not glossing over it, I know its real... but for what it is... it a great car.
99 1st engine... 2nd engine blown after 77K miles in 2007.
